Rich Franklin vs. Vitor Belfort to take place at 195 pounds
by Jacob Camargo on August 01, 2009

The UFC 103 main event has experienced yet another change. First it was announced yesterday that Vitor Belfort would replace Dan Henderson against Rich Franklin, and now the bout's scheduled weight has been changed to 195 pounds from the originally announced weight of 205 pounds.

“Just found out I will be fighting Vitor at a catch weight of 195 as per his request.” said former UFC middleweight champ Rich Franklin via his official Twitter account.

UFC President Dana White announced yesterday that Belfort signed with his organization following the folding of Affliction's MMA operations. He was set to face Sengoku middleweight champ Jorge Santiago at what was to be Affliction's third event.

The weight change comes as little surprise as both Franklin and Belfort are considered "tweeners" -- too big for middleweight (185 lbs)and too small for light heavyweight (205 lbs). The UFC has kicked around the idea of implementing a 195 pound weight class for fighters in between the weight classes and appear to be experimenting with the catchweight a bit lately.

White decided to change the original UFC 103 main event of Dan Henderson vs. Rich Franklin due to an outcry of disapproval from fans over the match up. Henderson and Franklin first fought at UFC 93 in January, where Henderson scored a razor thin decision over Franklin.

This will mark the second straight bout at 195 lbs for Franklin (25-4 1NC) as he defeated Wanderlei Silva in his first fight at the catchweight at UFC 99 in June. During his 15-fight tenure with the UFC, dating back to April 2003, he has put together a 12-3 record, with wins over the likes of Ken Shamrock, Nate Quarry, David Loiseau and Yushin Okami. 22 of Franklin's 25 career wins have been via stoppage including 13 via TKO or KO.

Belfort (18-8) will be returning to the UFC for the first time since losing to Tito Ortiz at UFC 51 in February 2005. In his time outside the organization he has put together a 6-3 record, with wins over Matt Lindland and Terry Martin and losses against Dan Henderson and Strikeforce heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem (2x). Over 13 years of pro competition, "The Phenom" holds 12 wins by TKO or KO and 2 by submission with notable wins coming against Heath Herring, Gilbert Yvel, Wanderlei Silva and Randy Couture.

UFC 103 takes place on September 19 at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas. Two other crucial bouts featured on the main card include a welterweight tilt in Martin Kampmann vs. Mike Swick and an exciting heavyweight bout in Junior dos Santos vs. Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic.
