It might be time for the rest of the world to start paying attention to a little-known promotion in New Jersey called Ring Of Combat. Promoter Lou Neglia, three time world kickboxing champion, claims, "we're very proud to say that we've produced more UFC fighters than any other promotion."
The list is quite impressive. Frankie Edgar, Josh Koscheck, Pete Sell, Kurt Pellegrino, Dan & Jim Miller, Nick Catone, and Bellator lightweight finalist Eddie Alvarez are some of the names that have fought at ROC early in their careers. Neglia attributes the success of the fighters to his own experience in kickboxing as well as a love for mixed martial arts. "I'm not interested in big names that are on the downhill or champions from other organizations. I'm looking to breed my own fighters." Breed them he does. In addition to the names that have already fought at ROC, he now has upcoming fighters that are trained by some of those same guys.
Ring Of Combat XXV was held at the Tropicana Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City on June 12 and in addition to a great night of fights, fans were treated to seeing several big name fighters in attendance. Matt Serra was in the corner of two fighters that he trains, yelling instructions and ecouragement like we heard from him when he was a coach on The Ultimate Fighter TV series. He was even wearing the red sleeveless shirt that he sported on the show and was gracious enough to have his picture taken with a few fans when his work was finished.
UFC veterans Ricardo Almeida and Gabriel Gonzaga also cornered fighters while Pellegrino, Sell, and Catone all seemed to be there just to take in the action. The arena was pretty much full and deservedly so. ROC is a good show with talented young fighters. Middleweight Victor O'Donnell was impressive in taking the title from former champ Rafael Sapo, who's also believed to be a top prospect. 205 pounder Ricardo Romero showed skill in a TKO victory and with the WEC in need of flyweights for its new division, they might want to check some tape on 128lb Nick Cottone, whose great wrestling helped him to score a dominant unanimous decision.
