A middleweight bout between former EliteXC middleweight champion Robbie Lawler and DREAM veteran Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza is in discussions to take place at a unannounced Strikeforce event in the fall. Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker informed MMA FanHouse of the possibility of the bout.
The Lawler vs. Souza middleweight tilt could take place at the same next major Showtime televised event as the newly announced heavyweight bout between Fedor Emelianenko vs. Brett Rogers, which is being targeted for late October or Early November possibly in Minnesota.
Lawler (16-5) is coming off a loss in his Strikeforce debut against Jake Shields in the main event of the promotion's June 6 event. Prior to the loss, he was unbeaten in six bouts, which included big wins over Joey Villasenor, Murilo Rua, Frank Trigg and Scott Smith. The eight-year veteran of the sport has fought for the UFC, Icon Sport, Pride, IFL and EliteXC. An astounding 13 of Lawler's 16 career wins have came via TKO or KO and he holds other notable career wins over the likes of Aaron Riley, Chris Lytle and Falaniko Vitale.
Souza, who recently signed with Strikeforce, was expected to face Jason "Mayhem" Miller to round out their personal trilogy at DREAM 11 on October 6 for the promotion's vacant middleweight title, but that fight has been scrapped.
Souza (10-2) fought to a "no contest" in his most recent bout against Jason "Mayhem"Miller at DREAM 9 in May. Prior to that fight he suffered his second career loss at the hands of Gegard Mousasi in the promotion's Middleweight Grand Prix 2008 Final at DREAM 6. The Jungle Fight and Fury Fighting Championship veteran has finished 9 of his 10 career wins by submission and has scored notable wins over the likes of Jason Miller, Alexander Shlemenko and Zelg Galesic.
