Highly touted lightweight prospect Ronnys Torres will attempt to make his UFC debut for the third time when he squares off against nine-time UFC veteran Melvin Guillard at UFC 109 in February. News of the bout was first reported by Tatame.com.
Torres signed with the UFC last year in Dec. 2008 and was originally slated to make his Octagon debut against Guillard at UFC Fight Night 18 in April. However, he was forced out of the event with a knee injury, which required him to undergo surgery. He was then set to fight Jeremy Stephens at UFN 19 last month, but another injury sidelined him.
Torres is riding an eight-fight winning streak coming into his UFC debut, however, he has not fought since defeating Eliene Silva via first-round submission at Jungle Fight 11 in Sept. 2008. Prior to the winning streak, he suffered his first career loss against Rodrigo Ruiz in Sept. 2007.
The Nova Uniao fighter sports an impressive 14-1 record, with 12 of his wins coming by stoppage. Aside from going 3-0 for the Brazilian promotion, Jungle Fight, he has also competed four times for Shooto, winning all the bouts with the promotion. Torres also holds a notable career win over Chute Boxe's Luiz Azeredo at Jungle Fight 10.
Guillard (22-8-2) is coming off of a loss to Nate Diaz in the main event of UFC Fight Night 19 on Sept. 16. He previously won three straight bouts, including back-to-back fights in the UFC against Dennis Siver and Gleison Tibau.
Guillard has been up and down during his time with the UFC, putting together a 5-4 record with the promotion. he has scored other notable Octagon wins over Marcus Davis and Gabe Ruediger; while suffering UFC losses to Josh Neer, Joe Stevenson and Rich Clementi. He has finished 16 of his 22 career wins, including 13 by TKO or KO, and holds notable wins during his seven-year career over Kyle Bradley and Rob Emerson.
Though yet unannounced, UFC 109, which is the promotion's Super Bowl event, is expected to take place on Feb. 6, 2010 in Las Vegas, NV.
Other match ups rumored for the event include a middleweight bout between Demian Maia and Dan Miller, as well as a heavyweight bout between Rolles Gracie and Mustapha Al-Turk. Former UFC welterweight champions Matt Serra and Matt Hughes are also rumored to be competing at the event.
