A middleweight bout between Rousimar Palhares and Tomasz Drwal is in the works for UFC 111 on March 27 at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J.
News of the bout was first reported by MMAJunkie.com, which states that both fighters have agreed to the match-up and bout agreements are expected to be turned in later this week.
The Palhares vs. Drwal bout fits the mold of a classic "Striker vs. Grappler" match up. Drwal fits the "Striker" portion, having finished 10 of his 17 career wins by TKO or KO and Palhares is the obvious "submission" counterpart, as he has finished seven of his 10 career wins by submission.
Palhares (10-2) has won his last two bouts, which include victories over Jeremy Horn at UFC 93 and most recently defeated UFC newcomer Lucio Linhares at last month's UFC 107 event. Prior to the wins, he suffered his first UFC loss against Dan Henderson at UFC 88 in September 2008.
Palhares sports a 3-1 UFC record, with his only other Octagon win coming in his debut with the promotion against Ivan Salaverry. The Fury Fighting Championship veteran holds other notable wins throughout his three-year career against Fabio Nascimento and Daniel Acacio.
Drwal (17-2-1) is coming off a win over Drew McFedries at UFC 103: "Franklin vs. Belfort" in September. The win was his third straight, with previous Octagon wins coming over Ivan Serati and Mike Ciesnolevicz.
Drwal also holds a 3-1 UFC record, suffering his lone blemish with the promotion in his Octagon debut against Thiago Silva at UFC 75 in September 2007. Also, he currently splits his training between his native Poland and San Diego.
UFC 111 features a championship double-header, including a headlining UFC welterweight title bout between champion Georges St. Pierre and challenger Dan Hardy. In addition, Frank Mir and Shane Carwin will battle it out for the interim heavyweight title.
With the main card pretty much set for UFC 111, the bout between Drwal and Palhares will likely be one of the two UFC 111 preliminary card fights broadcast on Spike TV.
