In Roxanne Modafferi's next trip into the cage, she will try to beat the unbeaten Sarah Kaufman en route to becoming the Strikeforce women's bantamweight champion.
Is July 23's ShoMMA 9 event going to be tough for her? Definitely. So what will it take for her to beat Kaufman?
"Hit her with my new super attacks!" Modafferi told FiveKnuckles.com.
Modaferri has been working on new techniques to improve her overall game, and while she did not divulge her strategies, she is confident that her training in Japan (where she lives and works) will help her defeat Kaufman.
Since Kaufman began her career six years ago, she has racked up 11 straight wins, eight of them via (T)KO. Modafferi has been fighting professionally since 2003, and holds an impressive record of 15-5, with most of her wins ending in decision.
While Modafferi will enter the fight with almost double the amount of fights as Kaufman, she is still uncertain whether the experience advantage will help her in the cage.
"I'm not sure," said Modafferi. "She's pretty sharp and well-rounded. I hope it'll play a factor in my favor, though!"
Kaufman became Strikeforce's first women's bantamweight champion in Febaruary, when she beat Takayo Hashi via unanimous decision. Modafferi watched that fight and has mixed feelings.
"That was a tough fight for me to watch, because I know Hashi is much better," she said. "And I think if she did a few things differently, she would have had a better chance. But Sarah won fair and square."
Preparing for the fight, Modafferi has returned to Japan following her win over Tara LaRosa in May. While she began training in mixed martial arts when she lived in America, she has no plans to move back anytime soon, as she considers Japan her home.
And how is she going to celebrate her win if she defeats Kaufman? Modafferi replied: "Drink a big milkshake."
