Roy Nelson brings Frank Mir into his training camp to help prepare him for his upcoming bout against Mirko Filipovic, otherwise known as Cro Cop, according to bloodyelbow.com.
"This one actually just fell in place. He was a southie, like Cro Cop, and me being a good jiu-jitsu guy, like Nogueira, so it was just a perfect fit," Nelson said.
Nelson and Mir actually combated one another at UFC 130, with Mir dominating the bout en route to a unanimous decision victory. Mir has fought Filipovic as well, knocking out the Croatian via knee strike at UFC 119. Additionally both Nelson and Mir have worked with each other in the past, so this recent collaboration is not too surprising.
"There's nothing strange about it. I think everybody in MMA, paths always cross, especially if you've been in this sport as long as we both have," Nelson added.
Nelson and Filipovic are set to square off on October 29. Both men would desperately need to win in order to stop their two fight skids.
A strong performance from Nelson is needed if he hopes to remain in the UFC ranks; Dana White has already expressed his distaste towards "Big Country" as he criticized his lack of cardio in his last outing against Mir. For Filipovic, his career hangs in the balance and can prove critics, who believed he should have retired, wrong with a victory.
UFC 137 is scheduled on October 29 at Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. The event is now headlined by a welterweight bout between Nick Diaz taking on BJ Penn. An injury to welterweight champion, George St. Pierre, scrapped his bout with title challenger, Carlos Condit, and the bout is likely to be delayed until Pierre's recovery.
