Roy Nelson vs. Paul Buentello at Affliction: Day of Reckoning - Also Wants Tito Ortiz
by Paulo Silva on August 11, 2008

IFL Heavyweight Champion Roy Nelson has agreed, in principal, to a multi-fight deal with Affliction who continues to stack it's heavyweight division. MMAWeekly is reporting that Nelson picked the promotion over other suiters because he wishes to compete at the highest level.

“Affliction has the best heavyweights in the world, and I’ve got to go (there),” Nelson told MMAWeekly. “The only way I can fight the best is to be where the best is.”

Nelson (13-2) is coming off of a big win over Brad Imes back in May and says he expects to face Paul Buentello at Affliction's next show set for October 11.

“We’re still filling out the minor details, but it does appear that way, yes. It’s going to be Paul Buentello. He’s been around the block; he’s fought for the UFC heavyweight championship and been in there with the biggest names in there. He’s a gamer and he’s there to fight.”

Nelson is also interested in facing former UFC superstar Tito Ortiz, who has been rumored to be close to signing with Affliction though nothing appears imminent at this time.

“The only side-track to the whole Affliction thing is, is that if Tito (Ortiz) does sign with Affliction, I want to be the first heavyweight he faces,” proclaimed Nelson. “If he can’t beat this fat boy, then he needs to stay down at 205 (pounds).”
