A very pivotal welterweight contest between contenders Josh Koscheck (14-4) and Paul Daley (23-8-2) is being discussed for an upcoming UFC event either in May or June.
Jon Anik, who is the host of ESPN.com's "MMA Live," mentioned the possibility of the bout during a chat today on ESPN.Go.com.
"Reports are it could be Paul Daley in May or June," wrote Anik when asked about Koscheck's next fight. "Trying to confirm."
At the post-fight press conference for UFC 108 on Jan. 2, UFC President Dana White stated that Daley would have to fight one of the top two contenders - either Jon Fitch or Josh Koscheck - in order to get closer to a title shot. White cannot get the two American Kickboxing Academy fighters to face each other.
"[Daley] is going to have to fight one of the top two contenders before we think about him fighting [current champ Georges St-Pierre]," said White. "My big problem in this division right now is the two best guys out there are probably Koscheck and Fitch, and trying to get them to fight each other is a nightmare. I'd really like to see that fight, but we can put Daley against one of them and see what happens."
Daley, who lives by the motto that he would fight "anybody, any time, any place," would love to fight Fitch or Koscheck to show off his wrestling and ground skills.
"I really don't mind," Daley said. "I'd like to fight Fitch or Koscheck just to prove that I've got improved take down defense, and I have a ground game. This is stuff that I'm continually working on. I just haven't had a chance to display it because I keep knocking people out standing up."
Daley is currently on a four-fight winning streak and has demolished his first two UFC opponents. First, he scored an impressive first-round TKO win over Martin Kampmann in his UFC debut in September at UFC 103. Then, he notched a brutal first-round knockout win over Dustin Hazelett at UFC 108 last weekend.
Koscheck was originally set to rematch Paulo Thiago at UFC 109 on Feb. 6, however, he was forced out of that event with an injury.
Koscheck has won his last two bouts, defeating Frank Trigg at UFC 103 in September before scoring an impressive second-round submission win over Anthony Johnson at UFC 106 last month. The win over Johnson earned him two "Fight Night" bonuses, which totaled a staggering $140,000.
The Koscheck vs. Daley match up could take place on one of three UFC events tentatively set for May and June. The events include UFC 113 on May 1 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada; UFC 114 on May 29 in Las Vegas, NV (which takes place the same weekend at the second UFC fan expo); and UFC 115 on June 12 in Vancouver, B.C., Canada.
