Sean Pierson talks about his UFC 141 matchup with Dong Hyun Kim and hopes to build an American fan base according to ufc.com.
Pierson (11-5) is getting no breaks in the UFC as he is matched up with another tough welterweight in Kim. Pierson debuted with an exciting performance against Matt Riddle at UFC 124, winning via unanimous decision, and was then matched up with rising young-gun, Jake Ellenberger, at UFC 129. Ellenberger lived up to his moniker, "The Juggernaut", when he KO'ed Pierson in the first round.
Kim (14-1-1 (1 no contest) suffered a KO loss of his own at the hands of Carlos Condit at UFC 132, also his first defeat of his MMA career. Recognized primarily as a grappler, Kim is known to be able to take control of fights with his strong judo base.
"He's a great grappler with great takedowns and underrated boxing, and I think he poses a lot of problems for me," Pierson said.
Now 1-1 in the UFC and with another stiff test ahead of him, Pierson welcomes the challenge.
"But at the same time, I think I've got some tricks that are certainly gonna cause some problems for him too, and that's what's gonna make this fight interesting. On paper a lot of people are counting me out and I'm a big underdog I assume, but the one thing I know is that I'm not an easy fight for anybody. I'm gonna go out there, upset his plans, and come out and bump myself up those rankings," Pierson said.
In addition to notching another win to his record, Pierson wants to make his presence known to American fans of the UFC. UFC 141 will be Pierson's stateside debut, competing in his native Canada in every one of his bouts in the past.
"Obviously most of my fan base is probably Canadian...hopefully I can put on some exciting fights and start building a strong US fan base, and wherever I fight, I'm hoping the fans like what I put out there. I wear my heart on my sleeve pretty much, and I go out there, throw bombs, and I just try to fight," Pierson said.
