The Ohio Athletic Commission gave Sean Salmon a one-year administrative suspension and a $2,500 fine for throwing a match earlier this year.
In a Sept. 2 column written for MMAJunkie.com, Salmon revealed that he allowed opponent Allan Weickert to submit him in a June 6 North American Allied Fight Series bout.
The Ohio Athletic Commission penalized Salmon for "not fighting to the best of his ability" and "conduct detrimental to the sport," OAC executive director Bernie Profato told MMAJunkie.com.
Salmon's year-long suspension will end on June 6, 2010, as the fight that he purposefully lost took place on that day one year prior.
Salmon wrote in his blog that he would get fired from his short-term job with the Wolfslair gym if he returned back the England with an injury or a cut, as he would not be able to train the other fighters. In order to avoid any unnecessary injury, when Weickert went for an armbar, Salmon allowed for his arm to be trapped so that he could return to England unscathed.
"Just so you all know," Salmon wrote, "that is the most embarrassing thing that I have ever admitted out loud."
He is not happy with the subsequent penalization, but has agreed with the OAC to abide by their rules and accept the consequences.
"Although I do not agree with the suspension and the fine, I plan on using this setback as I have tried to any other setback in my career: to analyze it, find anything positive I can take from it, and make the necessary changes to assure that nothing like this happens again."
Salmon (17-8 MMA) had a short-lived career with the UFC where he fought only twice, both in 2007. His first bout was against Rashad Evans at Fight Night 8 in January of that year, where Salmon lost via head kick. His second bout was against Alan Belcher at UFC 71 in four months later, which he also lost, that time to a guillotine choke submission.
