Sean Sherk returns to face Evan Dunham at UFC 119 in September
by Jacob Camargo on July 08, 2010

Former UFC lightweight champion Sean Sherk has reportedly agreed to return from more than a year layoff to face undefeated prospect Evan Dunham at UFC 119 on September 25 at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Sherk (32-4-1) is 1-2 in his last three bouts and last saw action losing to Frankie Edgar at UFC 98 in May 2009. He has not fought since the loss against Edgar, as he had been forced out of three previous scheduled fights due to injury.

Sherk was first slated to face Gleison Tibau at UFC 104 this past October but was forced off the event due to a shoulder injury. He then withdrew from the UFC 108 card in January after he suffered a deep cut over his right eye in training which required numerous stitches. Lastly, Sherk was set to meet Clay Guida at UFC on Versus 1 in March, however, he was forced off the card with an undisclosed injury.

Sherk sports a 7-4 record in 11 fights with the UFC, scoring other notable Octagon wins over the likes of Tyson Griffin, Nick Diaz, Hermes Franca, Benji Radach and Kenny Florian to capture the UFC lightweight title. His other UFC losses have came against top names such as Matt Hughes, B.J. Penn and Georges St. Pierre.

Dunham most recently scored an impressive split decision win over former training partner Tyson Griffin at UFC 115 last month. The win moved Dunham to a perfect 4-0 UFC record, scoring previous Octagon wins over Per Eklund, Marcus Aurelio and Efrain Escudero.

Dunham has put together a flawless 11-0 MMA record since turning pro in April 2007, picking up wins in other notable promotions such as Gladiator Challenge, Elite Warriors Championship and Palace Fighting Championship. The 26-year-old has earned stoppages in eight of his 11 wins including six by submission.

A light-heavyweight bout between Quinton "Rampage" Jackson and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira is currently being discussed to take the main event slot for UFC 119 after the promotion's President Dana White revealed earlier this week that the heavyweight title bout between champion Brock Lesnar and Cain Velasquez will not take place at the Indianapolis event.

 |  (8) Comments Storm: well.... i actually find this a lil interesting. granted Sherks stockier build and wrestling ability is greater then Tysons.... Dunham showed a lot in that fight. i hope he brings his game this fight as well. i havent been around lately obviously, but to mention about the Griffin/Dunham fight... i was severely shocked. i was working out and the prelims were on the TV. i was disgusted with Tyson. ya'll know i love him as a fighter and maybe Dunham is just that good, but Tyson didnt show up that night imo. i think he might have taken him lightly. it was sad, he was LUCKY that it was a split decision. Dunham completely controlled that fight. Masternate: with the injuries/layoff i think dunham takes this preety easily, but it should be a good fight, sherk is a tough sob Wandering_Minstrel: I think this is more to see where Sherk is at, as opposed to Dunham, sad as it is to say. Castle: I've got Dunham by UD Anthony: Hey, I'd like to see Sherk fight Nate Diaz. I can see Nate getting some revenge for his brother.
