Sean Sherk to replace Tyson Griffin against Jim Miller at UFC 108
by Jacob Camargo on December 11, 2009

Former UFC lightweight champion Sean Sherk has agreed to step in for the injured Tyson Griffin, and will face Jim Miller on the televised main card of UFC 108 on Jan. 2 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, NV. News of Sherk replacing Griffin was first reported by MMAWeekly.com.

As reported, Griffin was forced to withdraw from the lightweight bout against Miller due to an undisclosed injury suffered in training.

Headlining UFC 108 is a light-heavyweight bout between former UFC light-heavyweight titleholder Rashad Evans and 14-1 American Top Team fighter Thiago Silva.

Sherk was originally slated to face UFC sophomore Rafaello Oliveira on the preliminary card of UFC 108. Sherk vs. Oliveira was one of the bouts under consideration to be aired on Spike TV as part of the two fights from the UFC 108 prelims, which will air on Spike prior to the night's pay-per-view main card broadcast.

Sherk (33-4-1) is 1-2 in his last three bouts, most recently suffering a unanimous decision loss against Frankie Edgar at UFC 98 in May. He has not fought since the loss to Edgar in May, as he was originally set to face fellow lightweight Gleison Tibau at UFC 104: "Machida vs. Shogun" in October, but was forced off of the card with a shoulder injury.

Sherk sports a 7-4 record in 11 fights with the UFC, scoring impressive Octagon wins over the likes of Nick Diaz, Kenny Florian, Hermes Franca and Benji Radach; while suffering losses to B.J. Penn, Matt Hughes and Georges St. Pierre.

Over his long 10-year career, he has competed for other notable promotions such as Extreme Challenge, Pride, Pancrese and King of the Cage. Despite being known for going the distance, he has actually scored stoppage wins in 21 of his 33 career victories - which is a fairly good percentage - and he has only been finished twice in 38 of his career fights. Sherk holds notable wins outside of the UFC over Karo Parisyan (x2) and Manny Gamburyan.

Miller (15-2) is 9-1 in his last 10 bouts, most recently defeating UFC newcomer Steve Lopez at UFC 103 in September. His only loss over that 10-fight stretch came against Gray Maynard at UFC 96 in March. Miller has put together a 4-1 UFC record, with other Octagon wins over Mac Danzig, David Baron and Matt Wiman.

The Reality Fighting and Ring of Combat veteran has finished 11 of his 15 career wins and he holds other notable wins over Muhsin Corbbrey, Chris Liguori and Bart Palaszewski.
