Sengoku 11th Battle recap
by Jacob Camargo on November 07, 2009

Perhaps overshadowed by Strikeforce's two events this weekend, World Victory Road's Sengoku 11th Battle took place on Saturday, which saw its favored headliners Hatsu Hioki and Jorge Santiago get upset.

Sengoku 11 took place early Saturday morning , Nov. 7, at Ryogoku Kokugikan in Tokyo, Japan and aired live in North America on HDNet.

In the main event, Michihiro Omigawa notched a controversial split decision victory over Hatsu Hioki. Hioki was shocked by the decision and even Omigawa disagreed with the judges and thought his opponent won, so much so, that he took his winning trophy and handed it over to Hioki's corner.

The first round was a tossup and could have gone either way, however, it appeared Hioki won the round with his grappling, attempting several submissions on Omigawa. Hioki also appeared to win the second round, as he showed a varied arsenal of strikes in his stand up offensive. Omigawa hands down, won the final round, landing more significant strikes.

The loss snapped a nine-fight unbeaten streak Hioki had put together and Omigawa moves to 4-1 in his last five bouts with the win.

In the co-main event, highly touted prospect Mamed Khalidov scored a huge upset win over Sengoku middleweight champ Jorge Santiago via first round TKO in a non-title bout. Santiago took control to begin the fight by tripping Khalidov to the mat and quickly moved to his opponent's half-mount. Santiago worked his ground and pound attack from the top, however, out of nowhere Khalidov stunned Santiago with strikes from below. Santiago was visibly hurt from the blows and Khalidov saw it and immediately capitalized by reversing the position and unleashing his heavy hands on a defenseless Santiago. The referee would step in and call a halt to the action at 2:45 of the first round.

Santiago keeps his belt but sees his nine-fight win streak come to an end, while Khalidov has now is now unbeaten in his last 18-straight fights.

In other notable action, American Top Team's Jorge Masvidal earned a second round knockout win over former Sengoku lightweight champ Satoru Kitaoka. Bellator and EliteXC veteran Dave Herman picked up his third straight win by defeating Jim York via first round knockout.

Also in action, UFC and Pride veteran Kevin Randleman was handed his second straight loss at the hands of Stanislav Nedkov and op-ten ranked featherweight Marlon Sandro got back on the winning track by scoring a first round knockout win over Yuji Hoshino.
