Shane Carwin facing Jon Olav Einemo at UFC 131
by Tim Groves on March 23, 2011

Shane Carwin (12-1) will meet Jon Olav Einemo (6-1) on the main card of UFC 131, Dana White revealed during a live chat today with The Seattle Times.

UFC 131 takes place in Vancouver, Canada on June 11.

Shane Carwin has been rumored for the card for quite some time, but an opponent had never been named. Speculation ran rampant that he would face Cheick Kongo, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira or Matt Mitrione but none of those proved true. Carwin will fight for the first time since his loss to Brock Lesnar at UFC 116 in a heavyweight title bout. Carwin was slated to face Roy Nelson at UFC 125 but was forced off of the card with a back injury.

Jon Olav Einemo will fight in the UFC for the first time. The 35-year old Norwegian hasn't fought since a 2006 submission win over James Thompson. The ADCC champion's only loss was a decision to Fabricio Werdum back in Pride.

A heavyweight title eliminator between Brock Lesnar and Junior dos Santos headlines the card.

 |  (19) Comments illegalpoke: Okay. NOW I want to see the Kongo fight. Jon Olav Einemowho? RESEARCHED: Gloden Glory??? Sheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee Marker28: I look at this as a tune-up for Carwin. No disrespect to Einemo. illegalpoke: Saw some fights. Einemo has potential. And he could be a beast by now. thug4less: Yeah, I don't get this. Fighting for the belt to this? Really, brah? Giada Esposito: Meh. This is kind of a weak fight for Carwin, even taking coming back off his surgery into account. It should be an easy win for him, but a loss to someone with zero name recognition in the US would be huge, and even a win won't do much for him unless it's even more spectacular than his usual KO's. Wandering_Minstrel: Einemo is a bigger threat than most people think. This will not be an easy fight for Carwin. LexTalionis: don't completely count Einemo out, he has a extremely solid ground game. former ADCC champ, one of the few people to have a victory over Roger Gracie flyangler: I saw this coming when they signed Captain Nemo. This is a dangerous fight with no real upside for Carwin. I blame this on Nogueria for acting like he's not ready so he can fight in Brazil, and Dana White for not making it Kongo. I hope Carwin gets this to the mat and makes quick work of this. TGroves: Interesting fight. Einemo basically has no striking due to a previous foot infection that ate the skin off of his feet. He can't plant properly and has limited power in his strikes. But he is a legit BJJ threat and if it goes to the ground or if Carwin gasses at some point, things could get interesting. Granted, I have no idea how his chin is but I doubt it can hold up under bombs from Carwin. Keith Mondaca: I actually really wanted to see Carwin fight Nelson at some point. Hopefully match is made down the line at some point if both win.
