Shinya Aoki (27-5) will be fighting Antonio McKee (25-4-2) at Dream.17, according to MMAJunkie.com.
Dream.17: Fight for Japan will take place on May 29, in Saitama, Japan.
The announcement ends days of speculation as to who Aoki would actually fight. Initial reports pointed towards McKee as his opponent, but Visa issues eventually left the fight in jeopardy. News outlets then began to report that former WEC lightweight champion Jamie Varner would make the trip across the world to take on Aoki.
In the end, McKee was able to clear up his Visa issues and will meet Aoki at the event.
Aoki was recently able to silence some doubters have his dreadful performance at Dynamite!! 2010. At the event, Aoki faced off against Japanese kickboxer Yuichiro Nagashima in a combined kickboxing/mixed martial arts fight. The first round was to be contested under kickboxing rules with the second taking place under MMA rules. Aoki survived the first round by constantly clinching and purposely falling down to waste time, drawing the ire of many fans. He was then knocked out by a flying knee in the opening seconds of the mixed martial arts round.
Most recently though, Aoki was able to submit Lyle Beerbohm in under two minutes at Strikeforce: Diaz vs. Daley. The submission wizard showed off his Jiu-Jitsu prowess yet again by latching on to a beautiful neck crank that ended the fight.
Antonio McKee will fight again for the first time since his one-fight stint with the UFC. The 41-year old fighter was granted a contract with the premier mixed martial arts organization after winning 11 straight fights and going on a verbal rampage towards the UFC. He was defeated by Jacob Volkmann via split decision and was subsequently cut by the UFC.
McKee may poses a very tough test for Aoki. A gifted wrestler, McKee has made a career out of grinding out decision victories while taking very few risks.
