Shinzo Machida talks MMA future; training brother Lyoto for upcoming rematch with "Shogun" Rua
by Giada Esposito on March 11, 2010

Undefeated UFC light-heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida will return to action on May 8 at UFC 113, when he defends his belt in a highly-anticipated rematch with Mauricio "Shogun" Rua.

The two men first fought last year at UFC 104, when Machida was awarded a controversial unanimous decision victory after many observers felt that Shogun controlled the action and outstruck his opponent much of the fight.

Criticism of the decision led the UFC to take the unusual step of announcing that the two men would meet again in a rematch, but a hand injury suffered by Machida ended up delaying the fight. They will get the chance now to settle the dispute in the Octagon, when the UFC returns to Canada, in front of an always enthusiastic crowd in Montreal.

Shinzo Machida, Lyoto's older brother, is responsible for overseeing his brother's training in Belem, Brazil.  He has also fought in two professional MMA bouts himself, going 1-1 in his career, and plans on possibly furthering his own MMA prospects in due time, provided it doesn't conflict with his brother's training.

Shinzo recently spoke to Tatame.com to discuss his brother's preparations, as well as his thoughts about competing in MMA in the future.

You can view the transcribed version of the interview in English below:

What do you expect in the rematch between your brother (Lyoto Machida) and Shogun?

There is no way to predict what will happen in the fight itself, but Lyoto is better prepared than last time, stronger and more focused on the fight.

What have you changed in preparation?

What has changed is the concentration in terms of training; not having many people attending practice who have nothing to do with it. We keep him apart for his training, making him more focused.

How do you think the fight will go?

I believe Machida will get a knockout, and this is what we're preparing for.

How are you training Machida?

He is training very hard, incorporating a bit of everything; karate, wrestling, jiu-jitsu, muay thai, strengthening, fitness. He is training in it all. We started training in January, and his hand is already 100-percent. He is hitting pads. Now we can work on more focused training, and put on the finishing touches in the last month.

What did you think of their first fight?

I thought Lyoto won the fight. He tried to push the pace, although his style is to counterattack. Shogun didn't expose himself. He kicked him (Lyoto) when he was stepping back, but had few opportunities to finish the fight. That fight could start again in the same fashion, but the result would be different this time around.

What lesson did you take from that fight?

Our biggest lesson was getting used to so much attention, to all the interviews. It was his first defense of the belt, so it took away a little of his focus from the fight. He should perform better than that. We have changed a lot.

Do you think that Shogun will repeat the same strategy?

I don't know, we're still discussing it. Our training has not yet reached that stage, it is more general still. In the final month we will make our decision on the strategy for the fight. We're talking about, if he does this or that, what will we do, but we have nothing definite yet.

In the first fight, they both took turns attacking. Will it be...
