Shogun Talks Loss To Griffin, Knee Surgery, More
by Gavin Vincent on September 26, 2007

The following is a rough translation from an article posted in a local newspaper in Curitiba, Brazil. In it, Mauricio Rua discusses his thoughts on his defeat at UFC 76, a knee injury he sustained in training leading up to the fight, and his future in the sport:

"I was really very sad about the fight," said Rua. "It was the worse defeat of my career. I had never gassed as I gassed in this fight. But I have no excuses the error was mine. I did not train as well as I should have, I did not concentrate enough. I learned a lesson from this and now i will have to train to comeback stronger."

In the fight, my goal was to strike with Griffin and look for the knockout, but in doing this I became very tired. As i gassed, I wanted to take the fight on the ground, in a top position. At the beginning, the objective was to fight standing and to win the fight there, but as the time went by I got very tired."

Beyond the problems in the preparation, Shogun also pointed to an injury in one of his knees as one of the problems he faced in the last two months. "I busted the ligament during trainings, I was limited; I could not run, I could not push off right. Still though, I trained sufficiently, but it was not enough"

To take care of the issue, Shogun disclosed that he will have surgery to repair the damaged knee on Friday 28.

"I'll have a knee surgery on Friday and must be away from training for the next three months. Master Rudimar (Fedrigo) and I have decided that I should be ready comeback to fight in January or February".

About his future Rua is undeterred "My goal, although I was defeated,is still the same. The goal is the belt, the fight continues."
