Shogun admits knee shot did him in against Jon Jones
by Jason Benfari on March 28, 2011

"I'm just bummed out. He hits hard. I took a knee shot early on and was out of it the whole fight." -Mauricio "Shogun" Rua via GracieMag

Former UFC and Pride light-heavyweight champion Mauricio "Shogun" Rua admits that an early knee took him out of his game from the start. The Brazilian was soundly defeated last weekend at the hands of the young, virtually undefeated challenger, eventually falling via third-round TKO.

Rua (19-5) fought Jones after a year long layoff causing many to speculate about the condition of his seemingly degenerative knee's. After three surgeries many are left to ponder which Rua showed up against Jones - the one who was last seen pounding out former light-heavyweight flavor of the month Lyoto Machida, or the one who was dominated in spurts by lesser skilled opponent's Forrest Griffin and Mark Coleman?

Whichever it was, Rua was soundly dominated in all aspects of the game by a younger, faster more aggressive and seemingly more skilled opponent in Jones.

Jones will next square off against former champion, teammate and friend Rashad Evans later on this year. There's no word on Rua's next opponent, but popular speculation has placed the time and location of his next fight in Brazil this August.

 |  (41) Comments Marker28: I admire his honesty. I think Shogun is hesitant to use knees as often as he use to after all the knee surgeries he had. GO HARD: which shogun will show up?? ITS THE SAME SHOGUN. If Jones fought Shogun when he KOd Machida.. He would have whoopd that Shogun. Why? Cuz its the same guy... same fighter... Saaaame excuses flyangler: Rua should be thankful that knee didn't crush his sternum and or collarbone. I do appreciate his humility and class. Bones is just nasty though, nuttin he can do about that. horizontalcracker: Shogun didn't make excuses, he said he got hit by something in the fight and that [admin edit] him up. It wasn't an excuse, it is merely explaining what happened. GO HARD: and what bums do u speak of that anderson silva has fought?? please tell me. IwishIwasMMA: But that division is certainly weaker than the ww, lw, and lhw divisions. If that is not obvious then I don't know what is. D_V: I counted 6 DV references in this thread alone. I haven't even been here. I don't even post here anymore. I had explosive diarheah yesterday so I stayed home from work, I come on here and see my old POV thread from a week and a half ago and click on it and see countles personal attacks on me by people that don't even f'ing know me. Then I come in here and there are 6 posts referencing me, all in a negative way. Mostly cheap shots. I have a few minutes before work and I come in here and just flat out waste my time. I'm not even going to respond to the article because it will surely get twisted and I'll be attacked as usual. The truth is, I have lots of [edit] going on in my life right now. Almost none of it is good. It doesn't sadden me or hurt my feelings, or whatever, but it is [edit] sure diappointing that I can't even come to a god [edit] forum that only made it to the heights it's at right now because of my presence (and I'm [edit] sure proud of this place) without being unfairly attacked and insulted. The only thing I can do about this is to just not return. The people that obviously spend their lives thinking of ways to hate me can have their moment and go ahead and gloat about me being gone or quitting or whatever the hell they want. I'm not even going to return to view comments about this or anything else. In time they'll find someone or something else to hate. I hope you are all happy for ruining something for somebody that actually tried really hard to make this a place worth coming to. mike5k: I'll be back with more but for now; 1) STOP the profanity in the news section. 2) STOP mentioning other poster's names in threads. IwishIwasMMA: Well... The knee could have finished him no matter what. Honestly though, we have to ask ourselves DID the lay off make a difference? If you think yes, then if Shogun strings together some wins he should get another title shot.. if not then let it be. As for Jones now, he has to be thinking Rashad's take downs are coming by the triple digit numbers. He SHOULD be able to defend most of them at least.... but his Machida and Rampage problem I think are much tougher fights stylistically.. especially Machida.
