"I'm just bummed out. He hits hard. I took a knee shot early on and was out of it the whole fight." -Mauricio "Shogun" Rua via GracieMag
Former UFC and Pride light-heavyweight champion Mauricio "Shogun" Rua admits that an early knee took him out of his game from the start. The Brazilian was soundly defeated last weekend at the hands of the young, virtually undefeated challenger, eventually falling via third-round TKO.
Rua (19-5) fought Jones after a year long layoff causing many to speculate about the condition of his seemingly degenerative knee's. After three surgeries many are left to ponder which Rua showed up against Jones - the one who was last seen pounding out former light-heavyweight flavor of the month Lyoto Machida, or the one who was dominated in spurts by lesser skilled opponent's Forrest Griffin and Mark Coleman?
Whichever it was, Rua was soundly dominated in all aspects of the game by a younger, faster more aggressive and seemingly more skilled opponent in Jones.
Jones will next square off against former champion, teammate and friend Rashad Evans later on this year. There's no word on Rua's next opponent, but popular speculation has placed the time and location of his next fight in Brazil this August.
