The Last Emperor fell again Saturday night.
After an astounding 28 fight win streak, Fedor Emelianenko has been defeated for the second straight time. This time Antonio Silva used his tremendous size advantage and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt to dominate the Russian on the ground.
In the opening frame the two traded punches for almost the full five minutes. Neither landed anything solid as Fedor just barely took the frame. As the second round began, Silva charged in for a takedown and put the Russian on his back. He would be there for a long time.
The massive size advantage made it nearly impossible for Fedor to buck Silva off once he was mounted. Silva rained down brutal hammer fists and constantly looked for a rear naked choke the few times Fedor managed to roll over. At one point, Silva nearly choked out Emelianenko with a beautiful arm-triangle choke but the Russian managed to survive. The end of the round saw the two exchange kneebars before the bell rang.
Once Emelianenko reached his corner it was clear that his right eye was swollen completely shut. Referee Dan Miragliotta waved the bout off at the cageside doctor's advice, giving Antonio Silva the victory via TKO.
In his post fight interview Emelianenko hinted at retirement through his interpreter.
"Maybe it's the last time," Fedor said. "Maybe it's high time. I thank God for everything."
Silva will advance to face the winner of the April 9th bout between Alistair Overeem and Fabricio Werdum.
In the other Grand Prix bout, Sergei Kharitonov was able to knock out Andrei Arlovski inside the first frame to advance to the semi-finals.
The beginning of the bout saw Arlovski throw slick combinations, as he seemed to return to the form that won him the UFC championship. That allusion quickly faded when Kharitonov landed some stiff shots to the Belarusian's chin. Arlovski was clearly dazed and just never recovered. A right hand dropped him while the ensuing ground n pound knocked him out for good.
It's Arlovski's fourth straight loss and the third by way of knockout.
Kharitonov showed off his lethal power and seemed to be unfazed by Arlovski's punches. Solid shots landed on the Russian's chin but he kept coming forward. Kharitonov will face off against the winner of Josh Barnett and Brett Rogers in the semi-finals.
The three reserve bouts saw plenty of action, as all six fighters were looking to make a name for themselves.
Shane Del Rosario and Lavar Johnson traded heavy blows throughout the opening frame. Momentum shifted multiple times during the spirited affair as Del Rosario looked to land brutal kicks while Johnson looked for that one big punch. Eventually the fight hit the floor and it became clear that Johnson was out of his league. Del Rosario obtained mount and eventually locked in the fight ending armbar after some spirited ground n pound.
Del Rosario looks to take a big leap up in competition as he improves his record to 11-0.
The other two bouts saw Chad Griggs stop Gian Villante with punches and Valentijn Overeem submit Ray Sefo with a neck crank.
