Saturday night's airing of UFC 106's prelim fights scored 1.3 million viewers.
Nov. 21's show marked the third time that Spike TV had aired the prelim bouts before pay-per-view aired the main event fights. UFC 103 and UFC 104 both earned 1.4 million viewers.
While Spike's prelim shows are racking up viewers, UFC President Dana White told MMAJunkie.com that the UFC and Spike have not made the one-hour show a regular occurrence. The two parties will decide whether to air the prelims on a case-by-case basis.
The hour-long UFC 106 show, was originally scheduled to air two fights. But instead, the broadcast featured four fights. Over the course of the hour, Kendall Grove pulled out a tricky first-round submission victory over Jake Rosholt, and Ben Saunders earned a first-round KO victory over Marcus Davis. In the additional fights, George Sotiropoulos defeated Jason Dent via second-round arm bar, while Brian Foster TKO-ed Brock Larson in round two.
The next possibility for a prelim show on Spike will be for UFC 107, which will take place on Dec. 12. The main event is headlined by a lightweight title fight between current champion B.J. Penn and number one contender Diego Sanchez. If the UFC and Spike TV decide to go ahead and air a prelim show, they have the choice between the following bouts: Alan Belcher vs. Wilson Gouveia; Kevin Burns vs. TJ Grant; Matt Wiman vs. Shane Nelson; Johny Hendricks vs. Ricardo Funch; Rousimar Palhares vs. Lucio Linhares; or DaMarques Johnson vs. Edgar Garcia.
