Stephan Bonnar vs. Krzysztof Soszynski rematch now in the works for UFC 116
by Jacob Camargo on March 30, 2010

Light-heavyweights Stephan Bonnar (11-7) and Krzysztof Soszynski (19-9-1) now have a new date for their rematch, and will settle their unfinished business at UFC 116 in July.

Bonnar revealed, in a video interview with MMAFighting.com, that he has received the contract to rematch Soszynski at UFC 116.

Bonnar and Soszynski were previously reported to face each other at The Ultimate Fighter 11 in June, however, those plans now appear to have been scrapped.

The two first met at UFC 110 last month, where Soszynski was awarded a controversial third-round TKO win after an inadvertent headbutt opened up a deep gash on Bonnar's forehead prompting the stoppage.

Bonnar openly voiced his displeasure with referee John Sharp for missing the inadvertent headbutt, and appealed the loss in hopes that the decision would be changed to a technical draw or a no contest. His appeal, however, was denied by the Combat Sports Authority of New South Wales.

The loss was Bonnar's third straight, a streak which has includes previous losses to Jon Jones and Mark Coleman.

Bonnar has put together an even 5-6 record in 10 fights with the UFC, scoring notable Octagon wins over the likes of James Irvin, Keith Jardine and Eric Schafer; while suffering notable UFC losses to Rashad Evans and Forrest Griffin (x2).

Prior to the win over Bonnar, Soszynski was handed his first UFC loss, when he was defeated by Brandon Vera at UFC 102 in August. Prior to the loss, he had won six straight fights, including wins in his first three bouts in the UFC over Shane Primm, Brian Stann and Andre Gusmao. Two of his three Octagon wins have earned him "Submission of the Night" honors.

Though not officially announced, UFC 116 is expected take place on July 3 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The event will likely be headlined by a UFC heavyweight title unification bout between UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar and interim heavyweight champ Shane Carwin.
