Strikeforce Challengers: "Kennedy vs. Cummings" is officially in the books and it was a successful night for headliner Tim Kennedy, Ray Sefo and Tyron Woodley, among others.
The third challengers series event took place last night, Sept. 25, at the SpiritBank Event Center in Bixby, OK, and the main card aired live on Showtime.
In the main event, rising middleweight contender Tim Kennedy defeated prospect Zak Cummings via second round submission. Kennedy scored a powerful takedown in the first minute of the fight and he worked some ground and pound from numerous dominating top positions, including a full mount on two occasions. Cummings didn't give up though, depsite the pressure, as he kept rolling to avoid blows and submissions while taking punishment from the top.
Kennedy and Cummings started the second round exchanging on their feet, which Kennedy got the better of. Not too long after Cummings shot in for a half-hearted takedown, Kennedy leaped on Cummings to attempt a standing guillotine choke, which forced Cummings to scramble. During the scramble, Kennedy was able to secure a fight ending with a north-south choke on Cummings. The win was Kennedy's third-straight, and it moves him to 2-0 with Strikeforce. Cummings picked up the first loss of his career.
In the co-main event, kickboxing great Ray Sefo moved his MMA record to 2-0 by defeating former UFC fighter Kevin Jordan by second round TKO. Sefo opened the round with two powerful leg kicks in the first minute of the fight, and Jordan opted not to stand with Sefo anymore as he shot in right away for a takedown. Sefo defended the takedown well and ended up on top when the fight hit the ground. However, Jordan quickly transitioned to top, and then took mount position and pounded away at Sefo until he was saved by the bell.
Jordan started the second round by shooting in for the takedown, but Sefo telegraphed it and sprawled nicely to avoid being taken down. Jordan remained on the floor, clutching his knee. Jordan tried to return to his feet and keep fighting, but he was badly injured. The fight was stopped by the referee at 24 seconds into the second round.
In welterweight action, rising prospect Tyron Woodley defeated veteran Zach Light via second-round submission. Woodley controlled every aspect of the fight as he successfully mixed up his attack with strikes and slams. He seemed to toss Light to the floor at will. Woodley would score a big slam on Light in the opening minutes of the first round. He also advanced to the mount position and looked repeatedly for a fight-ending arm-triangle choke, but Light survived.
In the second round, Woodley showed more crisp striking. He dropped Light with a right hand, quickly pounced on him and advanced to mount. Once again, he looked for submissions. Woodley transitioned into an armbar and forced a tapout at 3:38 in the first round. Woodley has now won the first four bouts of his career and Light has lost four straight.
In other main card action, Thomas Longacre and Travis Calanoc put on an exciting three round war, which saw Longacre walk away with the victory. Former Olympic wrestler Daniel Cormier won his MMA debut by defeating Gary Frazier by second round TKO.
