Strikeforce Challengers: "Villasenor vs. Cyborg" is officially a wrap. The second challengers series event occurred at the ShoWare Center in Kent, Washington and the main card aired live on Showtime.
The evening's headliner between middleweights Joey Villasenor and Evangelista "Cyborg" Santos didn't quite live up to its slug-fest billing. Villasenor earned a decision win over Santons who surprised many by ditching his aggressive style for a more tactical approach. Santos countered Villasenor in the first round, but Villasenor stole the otherwise uneventful round with a late takedown. Besides a crisp straight left at the start of the second by Villasenor, the second round went much like the slow paced first. The action picked up however in the third round as both men went toe-to-toe. Villasenor seemed to be the fresher of the two as he bloodied the worn down Santos with several overhand lefts to close out the final frame and earn the hard fought decision.
In the co-main event, Tim Kennedy overcame nearly two years of inactivity to defeat highly regarded welterweight Nick Thompson in an exciting middleweight bout. In the first round, Kennedy and Thompson put on quite a grappling display with a array of submission attempts by Thompson and impressive ground-and-pound from Kennedy. The round was highlighted when Kennedy took Thompson's back at the same time Thompson was going for a kimura. Neither man could finish though. Midway through the second round, Kennedy was working from side control when he easily gained top position and began landing quick, powerful shots on Thompson, who was laying on his stomach. Kennedy unleashed three or four more powerful right hands before Thompson was ultimately forced to tap. It appeared that three punches hit Thompson on the back of the head during the ground-and-pound series and Thompson immediately protested the foul to the referee, however, the replay showed that any back of the head blows were more from Thompson turning his head away in defense than anything intentional by Kennedy.
But it wasn't the two featured bouts that left everyone talking. Jorge Gurgel vs. Conor Heun stole the show. The two ground fighters, both making their Strikeforce debuts, slugged it out for three rounds to an eventual standing ovation. Gurgel, who has often been criticized for abandoning his world class jiu-jitsu game in favor of an all out brawling style, was able to outlast Heun in this fight of the year candidate.
In other main card action, Sarah Kaufman defeated Shayna Baszler via unanimous decision to remain undefeated and middleweight Luke Rockhold opened the evening's telecast by earning a submssion win over Cory Devela. In notable undercard action, Lyle Beerbohm scored a very impressive win over Duane Ludwig and Dennis Hallman made Justin Davis tap just 20 seconds into the first round of their fight.
