Alistair Overeem was able to squeak by Fabricio Werdum and Josh Barnett finished off an impressive second-round submission over Brett Rogers at Strikeforce: "Overeem vs. Werdum." Both men will advance to the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix semifinals.
In a fight that hardly lived up to expectations, Overeem did enough in the judges eyes to garner a decision. The K-1 Kickboxing champion failed to impress, however, looking far from dominant in the striking game, while playing it, justifiably safe while in Werdum's vaunted guard.
On the other side of the tournament bracket, Barnett dominated his quarterfinal matchup using his high level catch wrestling skills to control Rogers and avoid his heavy hands. He secured an arm-triangle in the second round forcing a seemingly outclassed Rogers to tap.
Overeem will next face Antonio Silva in the semifinals, and Josh Barnett will square off Sergei Kharitonov when the heavyweight tournament continues sometime this fall.
