The HP Pavilion in San Jose will host the latest Strikeforce/M-1 Global co-promotion, airing on Showtime this Saturday night. The #1 heavyweight in the world and the #1 female fighter in the world are both on the card, as well as a rematch of one of Strikeforce's most exciting bouts ever.
Josh Thomson vs. Pat Healy
Thomson was the lightweight champ at Strikeforce before dropping a unanimous decision to current title-holder Gilbert Melendez. Prior to that loss, "The Punk" had ripped off eight consecutive wins over a period of more than two years. During his career he has come out victorious over highly ranked fighters such as Duane Ludwig, Hermes Franca, and Melendez in a 2008 defense of his belt.
Healy might lack some star-power but he lacks nothing in the experience department. At 22-15, the man known as "Bam Bam" has thrown down with some of the best in the business and came out on top against the likes of Carlos Condit, Dan Hardy, and Paul Daley.
Cung Le vs. Scott Smith
This is a rematch of a December, 2009 battle in which Smith once again showed his heart and resilience in a stunning comeback. Lee pelted Smith with an assortment of punches and kicks throughout the fight before Smith rocked him and knocked him out, once again solidifying his "Hands of Stone" nickname. He pulled off a similar feat several months before in a victory over Benji Radach, a fight that many voted for as 2009 fight of the year.
Le was undefeated before the upset loss in the December fight. His kicks broke the arm of Frank Shamrock in March of 2008, earning him a TKO victory and the middleweight championship. He later vacated the title to pursue a movie career but has returned to training for mma and is looking to advance his career in the cage.
Cristiane Santos vs. Jan Finney
For the time being, "Cyborg" Santos is best-known around the world as the woman who defeated Gina Carano. An impressive win indeed, but Cyborg is more than that. She's the most dominant female in mma right now and the Strikeforce women's featherweight champ. The Chute Box product has incredible strength and great striking technique, as well as a purple belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu.
Finney has some skills herself and doesn't plan on coming in and laying down for Santos. Her 8-7 overall record might seem somewhat pedestrian but factor in that she's currently on a 4-fight winning streak and you have to like her momentum. A former college softball player, Finney is obviously athletic and considering that she made her mma debut in 2004, experience is something that is definitely on her side.
Fedor Emelianenko vs. Fabricio Werdum
Fedor Emelianenko is the #1 heavyweight in the world. He's also the #1 pound for pound fighter in the world on most people's rankings. In addition to those two honors, the majority of mma fans and experts also distinguish him with the tag of "the greatest mixed martial artist ever." Some might say, "why bother to watch this fight when you know who's going to win?" That's easy. You watch Fedor fight because he's the best. You watch him fight because you never know what he might do, or how he'll finish his next opponent. And as of late, you watch his fights because although he hasn't lost a fight in ten years (a controversial TKO...
