Strikeforce signs Gesias "JZ" Cavalcante
by Jacob Camargo on June 08, 2010

Brazilian lightweight Gesias "JZ" Cavalcante has recently signed a one-year, four-fight contract with  Strikeforce and could make his debut with the San Jose-based organization in August.

News of Cavalcante's signing with Strikeforce was first reported by Fighthype.com.

Cavalcante will look to get his once-promising career back on track with Strikeforce. The former top-ten ranked lightweight's career has been hampered the last few years by injuries including several serious knee injuries.

Cavalcante is winless in his last three bouts, which includes back-to-back losses to Shinya Aoki at DREAM 2 and most recently Tatsuya Kawajiri at DREAM 9 in May 2009. He was originally set to face Daisuke Nakamura at DREAM 11 this past October, however, he was forced off the event with one of the aforementioned knee injuries.

The American Top Team product hasn't tasted victory since September 2007, when he defeated Andre Amade.

During his six-year career, Cavalcante has fought for other notable promotions such as Shooto, SportFight, HOOKnSHOOT and Cage Rage. However, its his time with the now-defunct K-1 HERO'S that propelled him up the rankings, going a perfect 7-0 from May 2006 to September 2007 with the Japanese organization, which included winning the promotion's middleweight grand prix in 2007.

Cavalcante has put together a 14-3-1 (1 NC) overall MMA record since turning pro in February 2004, with 12 of his 14 wins coming by stoppage. He holds notable career wins over the likes of Michihiro Omigawa, Bart Palaszewski, Caol Uno, Nam Phan, Vitor Ribeiro, Hiroyuki Takaya and Rani Yahya. His only other career loss came against Joachim Hansen.

Cavalcante is targeting his Strikeforce debut to take place at the promotion's as-of-yet announced August 21 event in Houston, Texas. Strikeforce light-heavyweight champion Muhammed "King Mo" Lawal is also expected to fight on the card.

No way(unless he does the 'challenger's series') does he get 4 fights in a year. 89ruotnoCTVS: agreed *I just threw up in my mouth when I said that* Little_Kang: JZ needs to come back blazing. It was painful watching his last two fights
