The Ultimate Fighter season 10 winner Roy Nelson (14-4) will face up-and-comer Stefan Struve (19-3) in a heavyweight bout slated for the televised portion of the UFC Fight Night 21 card at the end of March. News of the bout was first reported by Fighter's Only.
On the tenth season of the Ultimate Fighter reality series, Nelson made his way to the heavyweight final by taking out Kimbo Slice, Justin Wren and James McSweeney.
Nelson scored a first-round knockout win over Brendan Schaub to win the TUF 10 heavyweight final on Dec. 5 at The Ultimate Fighter 10 finale in what was his first official UFC fight. Prior to the win, he lost two straight fights against Andrei Arlovski and Jeff Monson.
Besides EliteXC and Bodog Fight, Nelson first made his mark in the MMA world while competing for the now-defunct IFL promotion where he captured the organization's heavyweight title and put together a stellar 6-1 record. The Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt under Renzo Gracie has finished 11 of his 14 career wins and holds notable career victories Fabiano Scherner, Brad Imes and Bryan Vetell.
Struve has won his last three bouts, putting together impressive Octagon wins against Denis Stojnic, Chase Gormley and most recenly Paul Buentello at UFC 107 last month. Prior to the wins, he suffered a loss in his UFC debut against Junior dos Santos in February 2009 at UFC 95.
The 21-year-old, 6'11" Dutch fighter has competed for other notable promotions during his almost five-year career including M-1, Fight Festival, Beast of the East and World Extreme Fighting. He has scored stoppages in all but one of his 19 career wins, including an impressive 14 by submission. He holds notable career wins over Marcus Sursa, Colin Robinson and Mario Neto.
UFC Fight Night 21 is now set to take place on March 21 in North Carolina, with an exact venue yet to be determined. The event will serve as the lead-in on Spike TV for the debut episode of The Ultimate Fighter 11.
For those who are confused, March 31's UFC Fight Night 21 used to be UFC Fight Night 22, however the UFC has recently renamed March 21's UFC Fight Night 21 to "UFC on Versus." Hence the reason UFC Fight Night 22 in North Carolina is now UFC Fight Night 21.
