Following his second straight knockout loss, former NFL player Marcus Jones has decided to retire from MMA. News of Jones' retirement was first reported by AroundTheOctagon, which cites a source within the Gracie Tampa camp.
According to the report, Jones does not want to leave the sport entirely, as he is interested in going into broadcasting.
Jones was one of 16 heavyweights featured on the 10th season of The Ultimate Fighter reality series. He was a fan favorite and a very likable figure, surprising many with his love of gardening. Jones was given the nickname "Big Baby" after he was shown to be emotional and sensitive throughout the show.
Jones was a member of Team Rampage and was the only member of the team to earn a spot in the quarterfinals, as he scored a first-round submission win over Mike Wessel. Jones then took out Darrill Schoonover to make it to the semifinals. But his run would end there, as he was knocked out by Brendan Schaub. He flirted with retirement following his loss to Schaub, however, he ended up being one of the seven TUF 10 cast members to be invited back to compete at the finale.
Jones suffered a second-round knockout loss to fellow ex-NFL football player Matt Mitrione in his official UFC debut at The Ultimate Fighter 10 Finale on Dec. 5.
The 36-year-old's massive 6'6, 262 pound body was left battered from his years in the NFL and the two straight knockout losses didn't help matters. He even endured several injuries on TUF 10 show, which included an injured knee that almost forced him out of the competition.
Jones made his pro MMA debut in Oct. 2007, following a seven-year professional football career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He was drafted out of the University of North Carolina into the National Football League by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the first round of the 1996 NFL Draft.
Jones retires with a 4-2 MMA record, with stoppages in all of his four career wins, including three by TKO. He fought for other notable promotions such as World Fighting Championships, Real Fighting Championships, Revolution Fight Club and Xtreme Cagefighting Federation. Jones complied notable career wins over the likes of Mike Ottman and John Juarez.
