At The Ultimate Fighter 10 Finale last night, UFC President Dana White announced that the coaches for the next TUF season will be Chuck Liddell and Tito Ortiz.
White stated that Liddell vs. Ortiz III is what the fans want to see. However, Liddell sports a 2-0 record over Ortiz, so the fight will not be a grudge match.
Originally, Ortiz had campaigned to be a coach alongside Forrest Griffin, who he recently lost to in their rematch. Ortiz had won their first encounter. With Ortiz and Griffin as coaches, Ortiz argued, they would be able to fight for a third time and settle the score.
White said that Liddell had been asking him to come back to the Octagon, and they thought that this was a good way to do so. Liddell said that he is excited to be a part of TUF 11 and is looking forward to beating Ortiz for a third time.
TUF 11 will reportedly feature a mix of middleweight and lightweight fighters. The show will begin taping in January, with the season airing on Spike TV in April.
Liddell has not competed since April 2009, when he was forced into semi-retirement after his UFC 97 fight against Mauricio Rua, where he suffered a first-round TKO loss. After his fight, White said that fans would not see Liddell in the Octagon again. What followed was large debate between White and Liddell's trainer John Hackleman.
Ortiz is coming off of a recent loss again Griffin at UFC 106 last month. Prior to that, he had not been in the Octagon since May 2008 at UFC 84, where he lost a unanimous decision fight against current UFC light-heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida.
Liddell and Ortiz's first fight took place UFC 47 in April 2004 where Liddell walked away with a second-round knock out win. Their second fight took place at UFC 66 in Dec. 2006 where Liddell successfully defended his title and took home a TKO victory over Ortiz.
