Takanori Gomi set to fight Rafaello Oliveira at Affliction: "Trilogy"
by Jacob Camargo on July 06, 2009

Former PRIDE lightweight champion Takanori Gomi will look to pick up his second straight win when he makes his Affliction debut against Rafaello Oliveira on the main card of Affliction: "Trilogy". The promotion officially added the bout today.

Gomi was in talks originally to face Brett Cooper at the event, however, an agreement could not be reached on monetary figures or the bout's contested weight.

Gomi scored a first-round TKO victory in his last outing over Takashi Nakakura at a May Shooto event. Prior to the win, the former PRIDE champion dropped two straight bouts against Sergey Golyaev and Satoru Kitaoka under the Sengoku banner. Gomi will be competing on U.S. soil for the first time in nearly 2 and half years since his gogoplata submission loss to Nick Diaz at Pride 33 in February 2007, which was later overturned after Diaz tested positive for marijuana.

"The Fireball Kid" is on the comeback trail as he looks to return to the dominant fighter that went 27-3 from 1998 to 2006, scoring wins over notables Rumina Sato, Ralph Gracie, Jens Pulver, Tatsuya Kawajiri, Hayato Sakurai and Mitsuhiro Ishida over that time span.

Rafaello Oliveira has won his last three bouts, with his most recent win coming against John Mahlow at Xtreme Fighting Championships 8: "Regional Conflict" in April. The Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt, Oliveria, sports an almost flawless record of 8-1, with 3 wins by TKO and 3 by submission. He suffered his lone career loss against rising undefeated lightweight prospect Lyle Beerbohm at a ShoXC event in October of 2008.

Affliction: "Trilogy" will take place on August 1 from the Honda Center in Anaheim, California. The main card will air live on pay-per-view and the preliminary card will air on HDNet. The main event is a WAMMA heavyweight title bout between current heavyweight champion Fedor Emelianenko and challenger, Josh Barnett. Former Dream middleweight champion and Emelianenko training partner Gegard Mousasi will battle Strikeforce light-heavyweight champion Renato "Babalu" Sobral in a light heavyweight showdown slated to serve as the co-main event.
