Takanori Gomi to fight Nate Diaz at UFC 135
by Hubert Lau on June 20, 2011

Takanori Gomi will fight another Diaz brother, Nate Diaz, at UFC 135 according to ufc.com.

Gomi had a memorable bout with Nick Diaz back in Pride 33 where the Japanese lost via gogoplata after the two slugged it out for the majority of the fight.

Gomi will be looking for revenge as he fights Nate on September 24. Gomi has been up and down as of late, going 3-2 in his last five fights. He lost his UFC debut to Kenny Florian due to rear naked choke, rebounded with a highlight reel KO of Tyson Griffin and lost to Clay Guida via guillotine choke.

Nate will be looking to snap a two fight losing streak during his venture into the welterweight division, losing to Rory MacDonald and Dong Hyun Kim.

The fight will be at lightweight and is sure to bring fireworks as both fighters have shown to stand and bang. Nate's chin has been tested in the past but he will have to be wary of the punching power of Gomi. Similarly Nate's ground skill should pose a significant threat to Gomi to have the former Pride lightweight champion keep the fight on the feet.

UFC 135 will be headlined by the light heavy weight championship title bout between Jon Jones defending against Quinton Jackson on September 24.

 |  (42) Comments GO HARD: Yes!!!! Masternate: i see gomi outstriking diaz, and diaz winning a controversial sd. flyangler: Nate just can't seem to find a home, homie. Not good enough at either weight, gate keeper in both. I'll pick him in this scrap though and it should be exciting. Wandering_Minstrel: I'm rooting for Gomi, but I don't think this is a good matchup for him. snuff: If the rules were different, a lot of the top people wouldn't be on top today. :p The scoring is really stupid. MMA should have never been about point fighting. But wrestlers are using the scoring criteria to their advantage. Is it illegal. Nope. Is it taking the easy way out? Hells ya. At least aspire to be like Brock, Munoz, Sonnen, GSP (Penn fight 2) when you take the guy down. Those guys at least go for the TD to kill. And Sonnen does go for the kill, just no power. 0311USMC: It takes some skill to defend a sub, it takes being able to back away, or in the non-usage of mma sprawl correctly. Defending a takedown is not as hard as people make it out to be, most fighters just don't sprawl. If you want to go into scoring the way it is set up and blah blah blah, when do the judges ever follow that? Blocking a punch is less of a feat than defending against a takedown imo. I don't agree with the scoring system what so ever, but I do think controlling your opponent is hard and should be credited. Also, as much as I hate to admit it, I agree with Matt Hughes. Damage should count for so much more than it does. Sure, you can pepper me with little stupid punches (I.E. Nick Diaz) all day, but if they do no damage and everything I throw hurts, then my 6 punches should count for more than your 30 that did nothing. Personally I think all judging should be based on damage, sure I can get a weak takedown and most of the time shouldn't count for anything, but if I get your feet off the mat and put you down with some force, give me some credit. If you are scrambling to get up and I can keep you on the ground where I want you, I should get credit. That is basically the point I am trying to make. A hump fest sucks for everyone but if you can't get up, then that's your own fault. IwishIwasMMA: What if he jumps guard? That is scored as a take down in mma for the guy who is on top. Herp derp :O Suicidalforlife: It's more horrible judging then the criteria IMO , king mo vs Moussasi is the best example I can think of, criteria favoring the wrestler or not there is no way in hell mo should have won that fight. 0311USMC: I said get controlled. I didn't say wind up on bottom. Thanks for trying though!! Mickey knox: I take Gomi, and I really think he's being underrated in this thread thus far. He's got pretty solid stand up, and, aside from being wrastle-****ed by Guida, I see no reason to think he's not moving up still. Hizoka: Gomi was great fighting the soup cans of Japan, but like so many of the old Pride fighters once they get in the UFC you see how weak they really are When you constantly fight guys below your level you look unbeatable but when you fight a guy of equal or greater skill you see what they are really made of... Gomi is not gonna last long in the UFC Gomi is going to be the first guy to get beat by both Diaz bros though i think
