The Ultimate Fighter 9 Finale Preview
by Mike Williams on June 20, 2009

In a fitting end to another season of the UFC's reality show they're bringing us a main card full of drama.  In addition to the six-figure contracts at stake in every finale, this one brings us a battle in which the winner could potentially become the number one contender and another in which the loser could see an end to a UFC career.

In the main event, TUF 1 winner Diego Sanchez will take on the UFC's very own version of the Energizer Bunny in Clay Guida.  Sanchez is 1-0 in his recent move to lightweight and a win over a fighter of Guida's caliber would probably place him at most one fight away from a shot at the title.  The popular blue-collared "Carpenter" Guida will be looking to end Sanchez' mini streak and expand on his own three fight winning streak.  His style and strong wrestling ability could present problems for Sanchez who's shown struggles against opponents that can neutralize his own wrestling talents and therefore limit his submission attempts.  Guida's cardio is among the best in all of mma and he pushes the pace as if every fight is his last.  The downside to the "keep on going" style is that the fast pace is prone to mistakes late in fights and making mistakes against a guy with Sanchez' skill can be costly.

Joe Stevenson and Nate Diaz are both coming off of losses in their previous fights.  Ironically, those losses came at the hands of Sanchez and Guida, respectively.  Joe "Daddy" could be fighting for the life of his UFC career having lost three of four, albeit to the cream of the UFC's lightweight crop.  Stevenson has decent kickboxing skills and a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu but his choices as to how and when he uses those skills have been called into question of late.  At 6'0" tall, Diaz has a reach advantage over any lightweight he fights and has a great ground game of his own.  It will be interesting to see if he can figure out how to work his way around Stevenson's strength advantage.

Midwest welterweights Chris Lytle and Kevin Burns also suffered losses in their most recent fights.  "Lights Out" Lytle has a distinct advantage in experience and striking but Burns has shown an ability to pull off slick submissions.  In a battle of contrasting styles, the winner will likely be the man who can take the fight into his own domain.

The TUF lightweight final pits UK vs. UK in Ross Pearson and Andre Winner.  Winner has been dominant on the show, stopping his opponents in the first round.  Pearson is going to come after him though, and that could force Winner into a mistake.  With a UFC contract on the line, neither fighter will be likely will go down easily.

The sole American left in the final, welterweight Demarques Johnson, will take on the UK's James Wilks who would love to make it a sweep for the UK.  Wilks' road to the finals has been a somewhat soft one while Johnson has been battle tested for years even prior to the show.  The big contract is obviously important here but fighting for homeland pride adds some excitement to the mix.
