The UFC Welterweight division has been dominated by very few. The first Welterweight champion, Pat Miletich defended his title 4 times. Matt Hughes won the championship twice and defended it seven times, including wins over Hayato Sakurai, Sean Sherk, Frank Trigg, and BJ Penn. Most recently, Georges St. Pierre has dominated this division.
With the UFC running out of competition for St. Pierre, is it safe to say that he is the greatest Welterweight of all-time? Due to GSP's strength of schedule and raw skills he easily takes that title.
Competition
St. Pierre has faced some of the best fighters in the world and he has won almost every time. His two losses are to Matt Hughes and Matt Serra and they have both been avenged. He has fought Hughes three times, Serra twice, Penn twice, Sherk, Trigg, Parisyan, Koscheck, Fitch, Alves, etc. These are all unbelievable fighters and he has made them look like second rate sparring partners.
The Canadian's dominance of the Welterweight division rivals Anderson Silva's dominance at Middleweight or Tito Ortiz and Chuck Liddell's dominance at Light Heavyweight.
Skill Sets
St. Pierre also has raw skills in all facets of the game. He never competed in high school or college wrestling, yet he is the best wrestler in the UFC. His striking is pinpoint, his jiu-jitsu is very underrated, his cage knowledge is immaculate and his mental game has become great. It is a privilege to watch him fight.
Mainstream Appeal
St. Pierre has also helped MMA become more mainstream. He is a superstar in Canada. He was voted the Canadian Athlete of the year by Rogers Sportsnet, winning with 89% of he vote. He is also the first MMA fighter to be sponsored by Gatorade. Check out his new commercial spot here.
After Mike Swick, who is left for St. Pierre to face at Welterweight? He will probably have to move up to Middleweight. However, he should not fight Anderson Silva first. If he beats Silva, then he will have simultaneously de-legitimized the UFC's 185 pound champ and taken any suspense out of his remaining bouts. Demian Maia, Dan Henderson and Michael Bisping would be great opponents for a first crack at the division.
With a few more big wins, St. Pierre could very well be considered "the best mixed martial artist of all-time." However, "the best welterweight" will work for now.
