Thiago Alves looking to knock out Jon Fitch at UFC 111
by Giada Esposito on February 17, 2010

Thiago Alves will have a chance to avenge one of his few career losses when he faces fellow welterweight contender Jon Fitch at UFC 111. The highly skilled Brazilian was knocked out by Fitch back in 2006 at Ultimate Fight Night 5, and is looking to return the favor when the two square off in March.

Alves was in the midst of a seven-fight winning streak when he stepped into the Octagon with UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre last July at UFC 100, but he quickly found himself outmatched and was manhandled for five rounds en route to a unanimous decision loss. It was his first since the loss to Fitch.

"GSP taught me a great lesson, and I'm really thankful for that," Alves told MMAJunkie. "I want to show the world what I've learned."

Alves recognized that he had become too comfortable with winning, and hadn't been challenging himself in the right ways. He also dealt with some disorder at his camp, American Top Team, and took time to reorder his life.

"I got rid of the bad energy, all the bad stuff that was going on in my life," Alves stated. "It was holding me back. Once you get fame, it comes with a lot of responsibility and a lot of bad stuff, too. You have to get through those things, though, so you can train through all the bad stuff. Because (you have to) keep the good time in your life. Besides being a fighter, you've got a regular life going on and (we're) normal people with drama and [expletive], so I just cut all the drama in my life. No more drama. I'm committed 100 percent to my career now."

Although Alves respects what Fitch has accomplished since the last time they fought, he feels he's had a more challenging journey through the UFC.

"I think I fought tougher guys than he fought," Alves said, though admiting Fitch is "more comfortable being there in high-level competition."

Alves career record stands at 17-6, with a run of 9-3 in the UFC, while Fitch is 21-3 with one no contest, and has gone 11-1 in the UFC. Still, when Alves faces Fitch again he's going to have one simple goal in mind.

"I think it's going to be a great fight," said Alves. "All I've got on my mind is to knock Jon Fitch the [expletive] out."

 |  (22) Comments thug4less: Lol at "manhandled" by GSP. You just can't stop the GSP-love, can you, writer-lady? ;) Anyway, I think Alves kinda has a point about Fitch and the evolution of their respective games. Fitch had better be careful or he might be taking a nap. mma3dge: i'm excited to see Alves fight again honestly MAStudent: "GSP taught me a great lesson, and I'm really thankful for that," Alves told MMAJunkie. "I want to show the world what I've learned." I was thinking that while they fought. No doubt GSP owned him, but he never broke mentally while he was getting bruised and bleeding. He looked pissed that his stuff didn't work, but he seemed to be learning as GSP was doing it to him. I said to myslef, He might be able to win next time they fight. Fitch on the other hand looks like the same guy as he ever was trying to give his opponent a dry-hump noogie. I like him for a while, but he's not developing. Thats my impression anyway. I say give Alves a round to see what Fitch is doing and counter it, then nappy time for Fitch. in Fact, AKA needs new blood, and I don't mean Herschel Walker. The Hitman: i really do believe this is going to be a great fight. cant wait. WAR ALVES IwishIwasMMA: War ALVES!!!! ROFL!!!! JK guys... Alves is more than likely going to lose... again... Wandering_Minstrel: I think Fitch is gonna overwhelm Alves with wrestling and ride that to a UD. JujitsWho: Alves takes it this time IMO. Alves did well getting to his feet against GSP who is a far better wrestler than Fitch. He has had a LONG time to get better and prepare for this fight as well. Alves will dominate the standup. Even if Fitch does get the TDs (he will get a few) he won't be able to keep Alves down very long this time. I think this fight will be decided in the stand-up, and Fitch is outclassed in that department by Alves IwishIwasMMA: The first fight was like this... Fitch pulls Alves' pants down and begins an onslaught on his bum.. Rape like this is banned in all countries except Korea. So I am assuming the second fight, Fitch will probably have more trouble pulling Alves' panties down, but once they come down, there will be zero lube. arlovskiviako: Fitch got dropped in the first couple of seconds, he passed to half guard and tried a guillotine which failed, so then Fitch laid on top of him until like a minute left when Alves scrambled to his feet, and got taken back down and held for the rest of the round, second round fitch shoots right for the takedown get him down, alves gets backup a minute or so later, fitch gets him right back down, fitch takes his back and works for a RNC for probably about 2 minutes until alves rolls back into guard fitch goes for an armbar and fails quite miserably, alves stands up and tries to punch him, gets sloppy coming in and kicks kicked right in the mouth for it, and got pounded out. So, what we see there is Fitch used his wrestling the whole time, fitchs wrestling hasn't improved, Alves has. Alves will not be controlled like that again.
