Thiago Tavares withdraws from UFC 103
by Jacob Camargo on August 20, 2009

The injury bug has once again hit Thiago Tavares as a knee injury suffered in training will force the Brazilian lightweight out of his scheduled UFC 103 bout against fellow lightweight Jim Miller.

Tavares was originally set to return to action at TUF 9 finale in June against Melvin Guillard, however, he was knocked off that event with a elbow injury.

Tavares (14-3) hasn't fought since beating Manny Gamburyan at UFC 94 in January. Prior to the win, he lost two straight against Matt Wiman and Kurt Pellegrino respectively. Tavares is 4-3 in seven bouts with the UFC with his first bout with the promotion dating back to April 2007 at UFN 9. An outstanding 10 of his 14 career wins have come by submission.

Miller is coming off a win over Mac Danzig at UFC 100 in July. He suffered his first UFC loss in his previous bout against Gray Maynard at UFC 96. Miller is 3-1 in the UFC, with other wins over David Baron and Matt Wiman.

UFC 103 will take place on September 19 from the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas. It will be headlined by a 195-pound catch weight bout between Rich Franklin and Vitor Belfort.

Also slated for the main card is a heavyweight bout between former PRIDE and K-1 superstar Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic and surging heavyweight prospect Junior Dos Santos. Martin Kampmann will also battle it out against Mike Swick to determine the number one contender in the UFC's welterweight division.
