A fight scheduled between former UFC Heavyweight Champion, Tim Sylvia and "The Ultimate Fighter" season 10 alum and UFC veteran, Wes Sims will no longer take place after the match up was denied approval by the Ohio Athletic Commission. The fight was scheduled to take place in Ohio on March 20 as part of the Adrenaline MMA V card.
Ohio Athletic Commission executive director, Bernie Profato, recently explained the reasoning behind the denial.
"The commission felt the fight was not going to be competitive at this time after comparing their records and the opponents both fighters had faced," Profato told MMAJunkie in a recent e-mail.
"And even though it was 2004, Sylvia previously stopped Sims at 1:36 of the first round."
A replacement for Sims has already been found in Branden Lee Hinkle (14-10) who has gone 1-4 in the last 4 years.
"Brandon Lee Hinkle has been approved," Profato stated. "He has faced tougher opponents and is also a professional boxer. In Hinkle's last fight, he went four rounds with a 20-2 Chris Tuchscherer, who just earned a victory at UFC 109."
Sylvia (25-6) has gone 1-2 since leaving the UFC following a loss to Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira at UFC 81 in February 2008. He went on to drop a highly anticipated contest to Fedor Emelianenko at Affliction: Banned, and then suffered a loss to Mercer at Adrenaline MMA III, before righting the ship against Jason Riley at Adrenaline MMA IV.
Sims (22-13-1) lost his first fight on "The Ultimate Fighter" season 10 to Justin Wren; and was recently used as canon fodder by Strikeforce, when he lost via TKO in two minutes to rising prospect Bobby Lashley at the Strikeforce: Miami card in January.
