Tim "The Maine-iac" Sylvia (28-6) is on a four fight win streak since his embarrassing nine second KO loss to former boxer Ray Mercer (1-0) and is the current heavyweight champion for Powerhouse World Promotions. Sylvia has finished all his opponents during the win streak in two rounds or less.
Sylvia's most recent fight was Saturday against Vince Lucero who was forced to submit in the first round due to strikes. Much of the fight was a back and forth over who had control of the clinch against the cage. But it was only Sylvia who would land any strikes. After some good punches and knees landed on Lucero he would buckle to the ground just to be let up by Sylvia, eventually Lucero didn't get up and Sylvia took his back and threw punches to Lucero's head until it was over.
The other names on Sylvia's recent victories list are former UFC veteran Paul Buentello (29-13), World's Strongest Man champion Mariusz Pudzianowski (3-1), and Jason Riley (9-4). Three of the four bouts took place in the superheavyweight division where Sylvia has weighed in at over 300 pounds.
According to MMAjunkie.com, Sylvia has been trying to find his way back into the UFC and was hoping his win over Paul Buentello would help seal the deal but his hopes weren't fulfilled.
After losing to Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira for the UFC interim heavyweight belt in 2008, Sylvia jumped the UFC boat and was signed by competing MMA promotion Affliction. Sylvia's first and only fight for Affliction was a heavyweight bout against Fedor Emelianenko (32-2). Sylvia was handily submitted by rear naked choke in 36 seconds. This loss to Fedor may have closed the door for Sylvia on returning to the UFC. If that closed the door, then getting knocked out by a 48 year old Ray Mercer probably nailed it shut.
Still, "The Maine-iac" will continue competing in smaller promotions in the hopes one day he'll be back in the UFC. His next fight is likely a title defense in February against Pedro Rizzo (19-9) in Atlantic City.
