Chuck Liddell has been involved in some of the highest grossing fights in MMA history. He's a 6-time UFC light heavyweight champion, a sure fire hall-of-famer, and he may be fighting for the last time when he faces Mauricio Rua at UFC 97 this Saturday.
According to UFC president Dana White, who appeared as a guest on the Carmichael Dave radio show yesterday, Liddell may be fighting for the last time when he squares off on tomorrow's co-main event.
"Might be the last time you ever see Chuck Liddell fight live or on television," White said. "The legend, the Iceman, the man who helped build Mixed Martial Arts. He's one of my best friends, but this could be it. He helped build this business, but this might be his last fight ever."
White has made bold statements before, but this one has some merit. Liddell, 39, has lost three of his last four fights and hasn't stopped a fight since 2006 when he earned a third round TKO over Tito Ortiz at UFC 66.
Liddell has maintained that he has no plans to retire should he lose tomorrow night, but does admit a fear of hanging on too long.
"I don't want to be that guy," Liddell told SI.com. "No one does. But I've always said that I'll make the decision to retire in the gym, not in the cage after a fight. My body still works. I'm healthy. I fight for a living and I love my job. Why would I want to give that up if I don't have to?"
