What do you do when one of the sport's best pound-for-pound fighters cleans out his division and starts to look like he's bored during fights? You jump him up a weight class and have him fight a guy that will stalk the boredom out of him.
Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva has won ten consecutive fights and an unprecedented nine in a row in the UFC. He's beaten some of the best in the game, including all-time greats Rich Franklin (2x) and Dan Henderson. The Spider has appeared indestructible throughout his UFC career and doesn't seem to have a weakness. His muay-thai skills are as dangerous as any in the business as he regularly finishes opponents with spectacular knees and elbows. He has however, looked somewhat stagnant in his most recent fights against Patrick Cote and Thales Leites, respectively. Enter Forrest Griffin.
Griffin's "regular guy" personality and willingness to stand toe-to-toe with the best make him one of the most popular fighters in all of mixed martial arts. The former light-heavyweight champ loves to move forward and take the fight to his opponent, something that Silva isn't accustomed to. Griffin is also a big 205 pounder with very good reach and a solid chin. He'll get the spark going in Silva again and he won't lay down easily. He's beaten Mauricio Rua, Quinton Jackson (for the title), and Stephan Bonnar twice. The first of the Bonnar fights was the debut finale of The Ultimate Fighter which attracted enough viewers to be widely regarded as the most important battle in the history of the sport.
Griffin might not be the most talented fighter in the world but he's tough enough to beat anybody. Silva is trying to cement his legacy as one of the greatest of all time and silence the critics of his most recent fights. One thing is for sure, this fight will be anything but boring.
