UFC 101: "Declaration" Main Event Preview - B.J. Penn vs. Kenny Florian
by Mike Williams on August 07, 2009

In the main event, lightweight champion B.J. Penn will take on number one contender Kenny Florian in a match-up that many consider to be long overdue.  By most accounts, Penn is the best lightweight in the world and is still considered by many as a top ten pound for pound.  People who are somewhat new to the sport may have seen him get mauled by George St. Pierre and assume that he’s not that good.  St. Pierre is without question the top welterweight in the world and he’s considerably bigger than Penn.  The Prodigy is an entirely different fighter at lightweight.  He doesn’t get over-powered in this division and his cardio is much better when he weighs less.  His balance and flexibility are almost inhuman; he can stand on one foot in the clinch to avoid knees and still manages to defend takedowns.  No American-born athlete has ever obtained a jiu-jitsu black belt as fast as he did and he’s won Brazilian tournaments that had previously only been won by Brazilians.  Personal achievements aside, Penn is just a really tough dude and feels like he has a lot to prove after the loss to St. Pierre.

If there’s a lightweight in the UFC that can upset the champ, it’s probably Kenny Florian.  Florian is a tactician, well-known for creating and executing flawless game plans.  He keeps his mistakes in the octagon to a minimum, which is evident by his 7-1 record against top lightweight competition.  His jiu-jitsu is strong, his striking and muay-thai are extremely dangerous, and he’s as fundamentally sound as anyone in the game.  Like Penn, KenFlo has also fought in a variety of weight classes and has been competitive in all of them.  He’s hungry and probably way overdue for a title shot.  He was given a shot at the belt when it was vacant in 2006 but lost a unanimous decision to Sean Sherk.  Since that fight, he’s rattled off six consecutive wins on his way to this shot.

Several question will be answered on Saturday night including; how will B.J. Penn respond to his loss to GSP? And just how good is Kenny Florian?
