Frank Mir vs. Cheick Kongo
The co-main event features two talented heavyweights that are hungry to rebound from losses to outstanding wrestlers. Mir suffered a second round TKO loss to champ Brock Lesnar at UFC 100 and Kongo was mauled in a unanimous decision loss to Cain Velasquez at UFC 99. As fighters with strong wrestling pedigrees continue to have success in mma this is an area that both of these men will need to improve.
Although Mir was a Nevada state champion wrestler in high school he was raised in his father's Kenpo Karate school and is now best known for his jiu-jitsu. He has finished 7 of 11 pro wins by submission but lately it's been his striking that seems to be his most improved discipline. He scored a second round TKO win over Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira at UFC 92 and although his detractors are quick to point out that Nogueira was hampered by a recent staph infection and a sore knee, the fact is that Mir's striking was sharp in the fight. Nogueira himself credited Mir for his performance, with particular credit given to Mir's ability to maintain "very good distance". His next fight was the Lesnar bout and once again his striking looked good early on and he seemed in top physical condition. He just wasn't able to overcome Lesnar's size, strength, and superior wrestling ability.
There's no secret or mystery to Kongo's game. He wants to keep the fight standing and use his reach and power to knock people out like he's done in 10 of his 14 career wins. A man who's 6'4", 240lbs. with the muay thai skills that Kongo has is a dangerous human being. He uses his reach well while striking and his knees from the clinch can be devastating. Kongo has come under criticism for not living up to his unlimited potential and for not improving his ground game but nobody can question his toughness. Velasquez landed punches and elbows to the face and head of this guy for 3 full rounds and and he just kept fighting. The native of Paris, France is 7-3 in the UFC with notable wins over Mirko Filipovic and Antoni Hardonk.
