The preliminary fights of UFC 107 will not be shown on Spike TV on Dec. 12 before the main event begins.
UFC 107 will not be shown because the 2009 Spike Video Game Awards will be airing at 8 p.m. EST on the network. Every year since 2003, Spike TV has aired the VGAs, and due to the fact that the VGAs are part of the Spike TV network, they have preemptive status over UFC 107. For fans who want to see the fights, they will be available via pay-per-view.
The UFC has aired the prelim bouts of three previous events: UFCs 103, 104 and 106. Most recently, UFC 106, which was held on Nov. 21, earned 1.3 million viewers. Spike TV featured the bouts of Ben Saunders KO-ing Marcus Davis, Kendall Grove submitting Jake Rosholt, George Sotiropoulos submitting Jason Dent, and Brian Foster TKO-ing Brock Larson.
Spike TV also aired UFC 104 on Oct. 24, which saw Ryan Bader win a unanimous decision over Eric Schafer, and Antoni Hardonk TKO Pat Barry. UFC 103 was also shown on Spike, on Sept. 19. In the hour-long show, Drew McFedries submitted Tomasz Drwal, and Efrain Escudero KO-ed Cole Miller. Both broadcasts pulled in 1.4 million viewers apiece.
UFC 105 also aired on Spike TV on Nov. 14 via tape delay from Manchester, England. However, unlike UFC 103, UFC 104 and UFC 106, the U.K. event aired its whole card, including the main event of Randy Couture vs. Brandon Vera.
UFC 107 will take place on Dec. 12, with the main event featuring a lightweight title fight between champion B.J. Penn and Diego Sanchez. Two other main card fights include a heavyweight battle of styles between former UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir and French rising star Cheick Kongo, and a lightweight clash between Kenny Florian and Clay Guida.
