UFC 108's prelim show earned 1.5 million viewers, Spike TV announced yesterday.
The prelim show was a one-hour broadcast, initially set to feature to preliminary bouts. The show aired at 9 p.m. EST, just ahead of the pay-per-view broadcast that began at 10 p.m.
Cole Miller, who took home the "Submission of the Night" award, claimed victory over Dan Lauzon by pulling out a reverse triangle kimura combo in the first round that had many fans claim that it was one of the best submission they had ever seen. Martin Kampmann also walked away with a first-round submission victory by sinking in a deep guillotine choke over Jacob Volkmann.
Due to the extra time left in the broadcast, Spike TV aired an extra two fights. After Mike Pyle dominated Jake Ellenberger on the ground for the entire first round (except for perhaps the last five seconds), Ellenberger was able to score a TKO victory over Pyle in the first minute of the second round. In the other fight, Mark Munoz won by submission (punches) over Ryan Jensen in the first round.
The UFC 108 prelim show marks the fourth time that Spike TV has aired the event's preliminary bouts. UFC 103 and UFC 104 each pulled in 2.4 million viewers, and UFC 106 garnered 1.3 million viewers.
While UFC President Dana White has said that Spike TV will not broadcast prelim fights for each UFC event, last month, Spike TV announced that they will air 10 "UFC Prelim" shows over the course of 2010. UFC 108 was the first, and UFC 109 on Feb. 6 is set to be the second. Spike TV and the UFC will announce the remaining eight prelim shows in due time.
