As fans are just coming down from the rush of UFC 114 less than 2 weeks ago, it's already time to start getting pumped back up for the next event. General Motors Place in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada will be the venue for UFC 115: Liddell vs. Franklin and the hometown fans are obviously ready as this was the fastest sell-out in UFC history. The main event features the long-awaited return of UFC Hall of Fame inductee Chuck "The Iceman" Liddell taking on fellow legend Rich "Ace" Franklin. Five main card fights will air live on pay-per-view following two preliminary fights being shown for free on Spike TV. The Spike card will show The Ultimate Fighter 6 winner Mac Danzig will take on exciting fellow lightweight Matt Wiman and 5-time "fight of the night" recipient Tyson Griffin will enter the cage against jiu-jitsu black belt Evan Dunham. As always, live round by round coverage of the event will be available right here at FiveKnuckles.com.
Carlos Condit vs. Rory MacDonald
Condit, known as "The Natural Born Killer" is the former WEC welterweight champion. He was forced to relinquish his title when the organization did away with the bigger divisions but that paved the way for him to enter the UFC where he came up short in his debut against Martin Kampmann but showed the world that he definitely belonged. He has since defeated Jake Ellenberger and will be looking to make it two in a row vs. MacDonald. Condit is a complete fighter. His 24-5 record as a pro could easily speak for itself but considering that he's finished 23 of those wins makes it that much more impressive. Add to that the fact that 13 wins were submissions and 10 were (T)KOs and it's easy to see that he's multi-dimensional.
MacDonald will be one of the fighters who will enjoy a home field advantage in Canada. The former King of the Cage champion is 10-0 in his career and has yet to leave one in the hands of the judges (4 knockouts/6 submissions). He pulled off a slick armbar and forced a tap from Mike Guymon in his UFC debut, opening some eyes to his ground skills. UFC brass obviously has confidence in him, as Condit would appear to be a huge step up in competition for him.
Ben Rothwell vs. Gilbert Yvel
Former IFL champ Ben Rothwell is an interesting specimen. He began his career at 16-5, losing a few to some very good competition, then ripped off 13 consecutive wins form 2005-2007. He's since lost 2 of 3, albeit to top contender Cain Velasquez and Andrei Arlovski, who was a top contender at the time and the stoppage in the Velasquez loss was considered premature by many viewers. Rothwell holds wins over Roy Nelson, Ricco Rodriguez, and two over Krzysztof Soszynski, including a knockout just 13 seconds into the first round.
Yvel is a veteran of all kinds of insanity. He's lost 3 fights by disqualification and even assaulted a referee in 2004. To mistake a bad temper for a bad fighter would be a grave mistake though. Of Yvel's 36 wins, exactly zero have gone to decision and an incredible 31 have come by knockout. Checking that on the FiveKnuckles' stats page, that's 86%. The tattooed native of Amsterdam isn't a turtle from his back though. Although only 5 of his wins have come by submission, he does have an active and dangerous...
