This Saturday night Indiana will join the list of states that have hosted a UFC event as UFC 119: Mir vs. Cro Cop will be held at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. The original headline was supposed to be a rematch between Frank Mir and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira but a Nog injury forced the UFC to change to Cro Cop. Nogueira's brother, Antonio Rogerio, remains on the card to give Ultimate Fighter 8 winner Ryan Bader what should be his toughest test to date. The main card rounds out with an exciting welterweight bout between Matt Serra and Chris Lytle and also features two fights in the most exciting and talent-rich division in the UFC as lightweight prospect Evan Dunham takes on former champ Sean Sherk and Melvin Guillard battles with Jeremy Stephens.
Melvin Guillard vs. Jeremy Stephens
Guillard, "The Young Assassin," has won 5 of his last 6 and this fight marks another step up in competition for him. His consistency has come into question at times but his ability is difficult to criticize. He's finished his opponents in 17 of his 24 pro wins and has never been knocked out over the course of his 34 career fights. Guillard has shown to be succeptable to submissions but it's a process that he continues to work at with trainer Greg Jackson and a host of world-class talent at that gym.
Stephens has dropped 2 of his last 5 but in the 3 victories he was awarded fight night bonuses each time. At just 24 years of age he's already a veteran of 23 pro fights and has been in the cage with some very good competition. "Little Heathen" has also never been knocked out but has won by that method in 13 of his 18 wins. A winner of back to back fights, a victory over Guillard would probably mean a ramp-up in competition for his next fight and put him on a list of possible contenders in a very deep division.
Sean Sherk vs. Evan Dunham
Sean Sherk last fought in May of 2009 at UFC 98 where he dropped a unanimous decision to current champ Frankie Edgar. He was scheduled to return three different times but was injured. In part due to the absence, Sherk has become somewhat of a forgotten entity in the UFC but at 37 years old he's a danger to anyone at lightweight when his game plan is in order. "The Muscle Shark" has a total of 4 career losses, 3 of which have come at the hands of dominant champions in Matt Hughes, Georges St. Pierre, and BJ Penn. The other was the aforementioned loss to current champ Edgar.
Dunham's star is currently on the rise and he's very deserving of a shot at a fighter of Sherk's caliber. The Oregon native is 4-0 in the UFC and 11-0 overall, with 8 of those wins being finishes. His most recent contest, a UFC 115 battle with Tyson Griffin, ended a split-decision victory but many believed he had clearly won the fight. That night opened the eyes of many as he came in a significant underdog to the talented and experience Griffin. A win over Sherk could catapult him to the short-list of title contenders just the way it did for Edgar.
Matt Serra vs. Chris Lytle
This is a rematch of The Ultimate Fighter 4 finale in which Serra prevailed. Serra...
