UFC 121: Lesnar vs. Velasquez Main Card Preview
by Mike Williams on October 21, 2010

The Honda Center in Anaheim, California will be the home of UFC 121: Lesnar vs. Velasquez. On paper, this is one of the more exciting-looking cards in recent memory. Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar returns to action after his impressive submission win over Shane Carwin after taking a sound beating throughout the entire first 5 minutes. He'll need every tool in his limited but always-expanding box as he sets to face off against the dangerous Mexican, Cain Velasquez. The event is stacked from top to bottom, including two exciting fights that will air for free on Spike TV prior to the event;  The Ultimate Fighter 11 winner Court McGee will enter his first contest since the show finale as he takes on Ryan Jensen and Patrick "The Predator" Cote fights Tom Lawlor.

Brendan Schaub vs. Gabriel Gonzaga

All seven of Schaub's pro fights have ended in first round knockouts and only one of them was a defeat. A training partner of Shane Carwin, "The Hybrid" has won back to back fights and is looking to get himself into the title picture with a big win over a bigger name.

Gonzaga comes into this fight with an 11-5 record but his losses have come vs. Fabricio Werdum (2x), who just defeated the legendary Fedor Emilianenko, 5-time champion Randy Couture, and top contenders Shane Carwin and Junior dos Santos. His most prominent and exciting win came by devastating head kick over Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic.

Tito Ortiz vs. Matt Hamill

Sometimes two competitors don't really dazzle people at the mere sound of their names but when you put them together in a cage, the fight just makes sense. Ortiz is out to prove that he can still make a run at the light-heavyweight title. He lost a fight to eventual champ Lyoto Machida in what appeared to be his final fight in the UFC. After some negativity and trash talk between he and UFC President Dana he signed with rival promotion Strikeforce but never fought there. He and White patched things up and he signed again, dropping a unanimous decision to Forrest Griffin in his return last November.

Hamill is a powerful wrestler with an improved skill set as a mixed martial artist. He's been impressive against some good fighters but can't seem to get over the hump against the top tier of fighters. Ortiz might or might not be the fighter he once was but he's definitely still a name and a win for The Hammer would be a solid stepping stone toward the top 10 of the division.

Diego Sanchez vs. Paulo Thiago

After a 3-fight stint at lightweight that didn't end the way he wanted it to, Sanchez is back at welterweight and trying to climb the long ladder to the title. In his first fight back, he dropped a unanimous decision to John Hathaway, giving him back to back losses for the second time in his career. He'll be motivated to come back strong and prove that he belongs in the talented weight class.

Thiago was relatively unknown before entering the UFC and knocking out Josh Koscheck in the his debut. He went on to lose his next fight to Jon Fitch then won 2 in a row before dropping a decision a Martin Kampmann, who's now one win away from a title shot. Thiago has the skill set and the necessary intangibles to get...
