UFC 124: St. Pierre vs. Koscheck preview
by Mike Williams on December 10, 2010

The UFC returns to the Bell Center in Montreal, Quebec, Canada with a card that features seven Canadian fighters, including the country's biggest mma superstar in welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre. St. Pierre will look to defend his title against number one contender and opposing Ultimate Fighter coach Josh Koscheck in front of what's expected to be a record-breaking crowd. The rest of the card, while not exactly loaded with huge names, should produce some good, competitive fights that could catapult some of the fighters into title talks.

Thiago Alves vs. John Howard

At first glance, one might look at Alves' back to back losses and think that he might be on the decline. Not so fast. Prior to those losses, to the consensus number one and number two ranked welterweights in the world respectively, Alves was living large on a seven fight winning streak. That streak included wins over Matt Hughes, Karo Parisyan, and current number one contender Koscheck.

Howard recently enjoyed seven consecutive wins of his own. The third of those seven wins, a decision over highly-regarded prospect and now fellow UFC fighter Charlie Brenneman, was the win that got him signed by the UFC. After breaking off four in a row to start, he ran into the takedowns of Jake Ellenberger back in August where he suffered a severe contusion to the left eye and his first UFC loss. Howard will be looking to bounce back against the very tough Alves.

Joe Stevenson vs. Mac Danzig

Stevenson is a fan favorite whose 3-4 record over the last few years is a direct result of being in the cage against some of the best in the world. A loss to BJ Penn for the lightweight title then two to Kenny Florian and Diego Sanchez, who went on to fight for the belt following the bouts and George Sotiropoulos, who is now probably one win away from a title shot. Following the Sanchez loss, "Daddy" made some changes to his training and looked great in his next two fights, both decisive victories over Nate Diaz and Spencer Fisher, respectively. Three of his last four fights have earned him fight of the night honors.

Danzig is in a bit of unique situation. He's been unsuccessful in four of his last five which would normally put him on a serious hot seat but his most recent loss was a controversial stoppage in a bout vs. Matt Wiman. Wiman locked up a choke and the referee stopped the fight, thinking Danzig was out but he apparently wasn't. The UFC has decided to give him another chance and Danzig will do everything he can to make the most of it.

Jim Miller vs. Charles Oliveira

Miller is one of the more under rated fighters in the sport. He's 18-2, has won five in a row, and those two losses came at the hands of current champ Frankie Edgar and number one contender Gray Maynard. The former collegiate wrestler is a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt and has now been victorious in five consecutive fights. A win here over a very promising prospect could secure a bigger named opponent and title shot talks for the New Jersey native.

Oliveira is 14-0 and exactly one of those wins has gone to a decision. Since signing with the UFC, he's forced two taps and both earned him submission of the night bonuses. The first of those,...
