This Saturday should prove to be a momentous day for the UFC and mixed martial arts as a whole. This will be the first event in Ontario since the sport was legalized there last year and the fans of Toronto are stepping up to the plate to the tune of 55,000 tickets sold, a UFC record. The fans in the Rogers Centre will be rewarded with two title fights and the swan song of an mma legend as Randy Couture will likely be stepping into the cage for the final time as a fighter.
Mark Bocek vs. Ben Henderson
This is a great fight. Bocek is under rated and well-deserving of main card exposure. The American Top Team product has won 4 of his last 5 and the loss was a very close fought decision to current lightweight contender Jim Miller. Seven of his nine mma victories have come by way of submission and his last 2 wins were both submission of the night performances. A win over the former WEC lightweight champ could catapult Bocek into the already crowded title picture.
This will be Henderson's UFC debut and his first fight since losing the WEC title to Anthony Pettis in a tremendous fight that was the final contest of the promotion. Being the recipient of Pettis' famous "Matrix kick" is the mma equivalent of being a guy that's getting dunked on in an NBA photo but Henderson is much more than that. Prior to that contest, "Smooth" was on a 10-fight roll, including 5 against some stiff WEC competition. His two classic battles with Donald Cerrone displayed his toughness and ability to overcome adverse positions, where Bocek will be trying to put him.
Break down and pick-
Look for Henderson to use his length to present problems for Bocek in the standup and his wrestling to defend in the clinch and on the mat. Bocek should be able to weather the storm enough to get some submission attempts though, and after Smooth uses some magic to escape a few Bocek is likely to lock one up and force the tap.
Lyoto Machida vs. Randy Couture
Less than 2 years ago Machida won the light-heavyweight championship with an impressive knockout over Rashad Evans and "The Machida Era" was born. Many saw it as the beginning of what was going to be a long reign as a dominant champ. The images in those crystal balls seem kind of silly now but make no mistake, Machida is a dangerous and tough opponent who deserved the accolades. Although his first title defense was via a questionable decision over Shogun Rua, "The Dragon" was 16-0 before being knocked out by Rua in the rematch. He had defeated the likes of Evans, Thiago Silva, and Tito Ortiz by using his evasive yet effective counter-striking style. With black belts in both Shotokan karate and Brazilian jiu-jitsu, one of his best strengths might be that of his clinch game and take down defense, a skill that is vital in a match against the master of the cage clinch in Couture.
The common belief right now is that this will be Couture's final fight. With a developing movie career and a very successful training gym,...
