UFC 130: "Rampage vs. Hamill" main card preview
by Mike Williams on May 27, 2011

Las Vegas' MGM Grand Garden Arena will once again house the Octagon for UFC 130: "Rampage vs. Hamill."  This card might lack a blockbuster title fight but it compensates with intriguing match ups with outcomes that are difficult to predict. Former Pride FC superstar Quinton "Rampage" Jackson will compete in the co-main event against powerhouse wrestler Matt Hamill. The other half of the headline features former UFC heavyweight champ Frank Mir as he takes on Ultimate Fighter winner Roy Nelson. Both of those fights could catapult the winners in the title pictures of their respective divisions. Rounding out the main card is a heavyweight contest between 6'11" Stefan Struve and undefeated Travis Browne, former welterweight contender Thiago Alves will square off against Rick Story, and the popular Brian Stann takes on former Sengoku and Strikeforce Middleweight Grand Prix winner Jorge Santiago.

Brian Stann vs. Jorge Santiago

It's fitting that it's Memorial Day weekend in the U.S. and decorated war hero Brian Stann is on the card. Stann gained instant notoriety based on his accomplishments as a Marine Captain but has now more than earned his reputation as a mixed martial arts fighter. The former WEC champion is 4-1 since entering the UFC and now 2-0 as a middleweight with 2 impressive finishes, a first round knockout over Chris Leben and triangle choke submission over Mike Massenzio. In the days of the WEC, ground work was thought to be Stann's kryptonite but he's brought his military work ethic into the sport and has shown that he belongs on the big stage fighting top contenders.

This is Santiago's second stint in the UFC. After going 1-2 with the promotion back in 2006 he moved on and has ripped through opponents since then, going 11-1 in that time. His most recent victory, a 5th round TKO over Kazuo Misaki, received nominations and wins for Fight of the Year by some outlets and probably contributed to his second opportunity to fight under the Zuffa banner.

Thiago Alves vs. Rick Story

Alves is a consensus top 5 welterweight in the world. The muay-Thai expert and jiu-jitsu black belt had torn off seven consecutive wins in the UFC before dropping back to back decisions to Georges St. Pierre and Jon Fitch who are almost unanimously number one and two, respectively. He came back with a win over John Howard and has vowed to end this upcoming fight with an impressive knockout.

Story dropped his UFC debut to John Hathaway and his since rattled off a five-fight streak of his own. The former collegiate wrestler is 12-3 for his pro career and 5-1 in the UFC. In what's been the highlight of his career, he earned both submission of the night and fight of the night by defeating Brian Foster via arm triangle at UFC 103. That was the first of his five recent wins and a sixth over a fighter of Alves' caliber should put him relatively close to a shot at welterweight gold.

Stefan Struve vs. Travis Browne

Struve is probably best known for being 6'11" but at some point this guy has to be acknowledged for being a skilled and tough competitor. He's 21-4 as a pro and 5-2 in the UFC and he's only recently turned 23 years old. He's not only successful and tough with a bright future but he's also exciting. In his 25 fights he's gone...
